2018 Estoril Open features Stefanos Tsitsipas, Kyle Edmund and More!

Tennis Atlantic is pleased to be able to provide some on-site coverage from the Estoril Open this week, a 250 on clay and Portugal’s only ATP event. Here is your full preview, with predictions.

Top Half:

Kevin Anderson starts his French Open prep with an opening match against Pablo Andujar or Stefanos Tsitsipas. It’ll be a tough match either way with Andujar a recent champ in Marrakech, and Tsitsipas a finalist in Barcelona. I’ll go with Andujar over Tsitsipas and Anderson in upsets. Roberto Carballes Baena takes on American Bjorn Fratangelo, the winner of that match should defeat Cam Norrie or Robin Haase to reach the quarters, with Andujar in the semifinals in my bracket.

Kyle Edmund will face either home favorite Gastao Elias or Alex De Minaur in round 2, Edmund, a finalist in Marrakech should win that match and get past Gilles Simon or Joao Sousa in the quarters. Simon opens with wild card Pedro Sousa, Joao Sousa takes on Daniil Medvedev, I have Edmund over Simon in the quarters.

Bottom Half:

Pablo Carreno Busta will face Nicolas Kicker or a qualifier, with Leonardo Mayer or Nicolas Jarry awaiting in the quarters. I’ll back Mayer to beat Jarry and Frederico Silva or a qualifier before falling to PCB. PCB comes off a solid semifinal showing in Barcelona.

Albert Ramos will be favored to win the third section of the draw, he opens with Federico Delbonis, a player in poor form, a qualifier awaits in round 2, with Gilles Muller/Frances Tiafoe/Tennys Sandgren awaiting in the quarters. I’ll go with Muller over Tiafoe, with Ramos winning the section.

Anderson looms over the field, but Carreno Busta should be favored to win the title, and I’ll go with Andujar in another dark horse run. He’s rebuilding his career after injury.

There are three ATP 250 tournaments this week, the first of which takes place in Estoril, Portugal, as players continue to chase points on clay this Spring.

First round matches to watch:

(8)Benoit Paire vs. Nicolas Almagro

The defending champion Almagro could be knocked out in the first round in this one, as Benoit Paire is a relatively formidable opponent for a 250, and has a semifinal on clay already this year, while Almagro has struggled. This matchup is relatively even, but with Almagro yet to find his footing this season, I have Paire edging through.

(5)Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Yuichi Sugita

Del Potro should dominate this matchup, but Sugita qualified and reached the quarters in Barcelona winning matches against Robredo, Gasquet, and Carreno Busta. Normally a challenger journeyman, Sugita’s form looks to be at a career peak and Del Potro must be careful to avoid the upset. The Argentine hasn’t played a match on clay in a year.

(6)Joao Sousa vs. (Q)Bjorn Fratangelo

Home hero Sousa has lost two straight while Fratangelo has qualified for consecutive ATP tournaments. Sousa should be favored at home, but unlike most Americans Fratangelo has real skill on clay and this is another upset watch match. I still have Sousa prevailing.

Top Half:

With Tommy Robredo having lost three straight, top seed Pablo Carreno Busta should defeat him or Evgeny Donskoy, then Paire or Gastao Elias (who opens with Malek Jaziri) to reach the semifinals. The Spaniard is the most solid clay courter in this tournament. The section below PCB features a host of strugglers, David Ferrer has lost five straight, while Denis Istomin has lost four straight. Local favorite Frederico Ferreira Silva is still a big underdog and thus Ferrer should fall to Del Potro in the quarterfinals, after Del Potro beats Sugita and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (who opens with Ryan Harrison, who has also lost five straight).

Bottom Half:

Despite being upset last week, Richard Gasquet is still a solid enough clay court veteran to be favored over Carlos Berlocq or qualifier Elias Ymer in round 2. Kyle Edmund is 2-2 in his last four matches and opens with red hot 23 year old qualifier Joao Domingues, who is making his ATP main draw debut at home. Edmund should fall to Kevin Anderson, after Anderson beats qualifier Sal Caruso, and then Gasquet over Anderson is the pick to reach the semifinals.

Despite losing three straight matches, Paul-Henri Mathieu is ripe to make the quarterfinals over journeyman Pedro Sousa, and Gilles Muller, who struggles on clay. I also have Taro Daniel finding form, defeating Renzo Olivo, and Joao Sousa to bust open this section, he should also defeat Mathieu to reach the semifinals.

Dark Horse: Taro Daniel

In a weak and difficult to predict draw, the section that has Joao Sousa along with Mathieu and Taro Daniel is the most open. I don’t trust Sousa in Estoril, and Daniel has demonstrated ability on clay in the past, he’s talented on the surface and has great potential. This week is his opportunity to show it and reach the semifinals or better.

I’ll back Carreno Busta to get a third career ATP title in this field, Del Potro is dangerous but has limited recent history on clay, and Gasquet’s form is not his best.

Tennis Atlantic will once again have on-site reporting from the 2016 Millennium Estoril Open, Portugal’s only ATP tournament. It’s a 250 level clay court tournament.

First round matchups to watch:

Gastao Elias vs. Paul-Henri Mathieu

Mathieu is 3-0 against Elias, but the Portugese home player comes off a great run in clay court challengers, featuring a semifinal, a quarterfinal, and a title. PHM was a quarterfinalist in Casablanca, and is looking to get into winning form. It’ll be a tough match, but I have the French player advancing.

Paolo Lorenzi vs. (Q)Elias Ymer

Bucharest quarterfinalist Paolo Lorenzi faces the young qualifer Ymer, who recently took a challenger title on clay. Lorenzi is a steady, and experienced dirtballer, while Ymer has a lot more upside and potential. This should be a good match for fans of clay court tennis, and I have Lorenzi advancing.

Top Half:

Gilles Simon will seek to give Estoril it’s second straight French champion, but to get that far he’ll need to defeat Elias or PHM, and then either Pablo Carreno Busta or Fernando Verdasco in the quarterfinals to get started. Simon is 10-5 on clay over the last two seasons, and he should reach the semifinals and move to 12-5. PCB is 4-3 over his last three clay court tournaments. He’s not in great form, but he should defeat current Bucharest finalist Verdasco, or a lucky loser, if Verdasco drops out of this draw after having to play a rain delayed Bucharest final on Monday. Monte Carlo qualifier Taro Daniel looks set to defeat qualifier Steven Diez before falling to PCB, who is the superior clay courter. Simon over PCB is my pick.

Barcelona semifinalist Benoit Paire has found form with just a pair of top ten losses in recent weeks, along with five wins. Paire should send either Daniel Gimeno-Traver or Kyle Edmund home, as neither player is in great form at the moment, then defeat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez for a spot in the semifinals. The Bucharest semifinalist GGL opens with serve and volleyer Michael Berrer, with either Thomas Fabbiano or qualifier Stephane Robert on deck, neither of whom are top players, or in good form. Paire is 2-1 against GGL in the head to head, and if he can stay focused, he has the edge.

Bottom Half:

Defending finalist Nick Kyrgios was 8-6 on clay last year, and is 14-4 on the season, making his clay debut this year in Estoril. Kyrgios is on track for a young gun battle with Borna Coric in the quarterfinals, as long as the Casablanca finalist defeats qualifier Andrea Arnaboldi and either Benjamin Becker or Rogerio Dutra Silva. Kyrgios has to beat either Daniel Munoz or Inigo Cervantes in round 2, both Spaniards are struggling. Coric and Kyrgios have never played, but I have Kyrgios advancing as he’s likely the better player at this point in their careers.

Portugese #1 Joao Sousa is in poor form and could really use a string of wins on home soil. Sousa should move to 2-3 on clay this season with a win over fellow struggler Nicolas Almagro. Almagro opens with Portugese local Frederico Ferreira Silva. Leonardo Mayer is good on clay, and should defeat local wild card Pedro Sousa, and the Lorenzi/Ymer winner to reach the quarterfinals in his first clay tournament of the season. Mayer over Sousa seems like the safe pick given Sousa’s poor play recently.

Dark Horse: Paul-Henri Mathieu

Non-seeds are unlikely to do well in Estoril, but if PHM can upset Simon, he’ll have a great shot at not only reaching the quarterfinals, but moving to the semis and beyond. He’s an experienced veteran who can find form and make a run from time to time.

Simon has won his previous three meetings against Paire, and Kyrgios is likely a sharper player than Mayer at the moment.

Simon and Kyrgios have never met, and it’s tough to pick a winner, but Kyrgios reached the final here last year, and he should be hungry for another ATP title this season, with a great chance to take one here.
