Another cloudless day in Newport saw the return of an old favorite and four qualifiers advancing to the main draw. Two time Grand Slam Champion Lleyton Hewitt won in doubles with Chris Guccione, while Tim Smyczek, Sergei Bubka, Izak Van Der Merwe and Benjamin Becker had their tickets punched. And Vasek Pospisil hosted the annual kid’s clinic.
With his first grass match ever, Jack Sock made the most of Center Court, exacting a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 win over Igor Kunitsyn. Nico Mahut did his part to set up a second round match with Isner by dispatching Marco Chiudinelli 6-0, 7-6 (2). Michael Russell did his part to continue Young’s frustrating slump, sending him back to Atlanta 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. Dudi Sela took advantage of numerous mistakes by Canadian Frank Dancevic 6-0, 6-2, and Olivier Rochus outlasted Japan’s Go Soeda 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Tomorrow’s action includes Nishikori/Sijsling, Bogo/Querrey, Becker/Goffin at 11 a.m., followed by Raonic/Ebden, Smyczek/Istomin, Van Der Merwe/Muller, followed by Isner/Bubka, Zemlja/Ram, Matosevic/Levine and Pospisil/Hewitt.
