A win in the second round today will lead you to the wall that is one more match to qualify for America’s biggest tennis prize, main draw at the U.S. Open in New York.

Two years ago, you wouldn’t have been surprised to find Chung in the round of 16 here. Injuries and bad luck have taken their toll, but we’ll find out where his game is in a match against Italy’s Stefano Napolitano, who’s trying to qualify for any tour-level main draw, let alone a grand slam. This is a first meeting, but Chung is 8-2 in his last 10 hard court matches, so edge to him.

American Jenson Brooksby, a wild card recipient, shares one thing with Sugita: they’re both playing excellent tennis on hard courts right now. Brooksby took out lesser-known Japanese player Kaichi Uchida on Monday in straight sets, but this is Yuichi Sugita.

Gael Monfils Looks To Get Back on Track at the Antalya Open 250

The Antalya Open 250 is one of two final ATP warm up tournaments for Wimbledon and one of the last opportunities to gain ATP points on grass this season. Here is your look at all the action in Turkey this week.

Top Half:

Adrian Mannarino played good enough in Queens to suggest he’ll defeat Evgeny Donskoy/Ricardas Berankis in round 2 and then get past Florian Mayer or Joao Sousa in the quarters. I have Mayer defeating Mirza Basic in round 2, after Basic defeats Paolo Lorenzi.

Gael Monfils vs Robin Haase looks to be the matchup in quarterfinal #2. Monfils should find form to defeat a qualifier or Marcos Baghdatis, while Haase needs to defeat a qualifier and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez or a qualifier. I’ll go with Monfils to win the quarterfinal contest.

Bottom Half:

Marius Copil should have a good tournament with only Cem Ilkel and Damir Dzumhur standing in his path to the quarters. I’ll back Yuichi Sugita to continue his good form from Queens and defeat Guido Pella and Federico Delbonis/Pierre-Hugues Herbert and reach the quarters. Sugita over Copil is my pick at that stage.

Fernando Verdasco has a nice draw with Jiri Vesely/Jordan Thompson in the way in round 2, and Dusan Lajovic or a qualifier/Nikoloz Basilashvili/Roberto Carballes Baena awaiting in the quarters. Verdasco should win this section.

Grass Court Season Kicks off With Libema Open 250 in the Netherlands

If you are tired of the red clay, you’re in for a treat starting Monday. The ATP grass court season begins with the 250 stop in the Netherlands that is a joint event with the WTA. Here is your look at the field with predictions for the week ahead.

Top Half:

The second round match between Frenchmen Adrian Mannarino and Jeremy Chardy looks to be a great one. Chardy has to defeat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez first to get there. I’ll go with Mannarino to find his form back on a faster surface and reach the quarters. At that stage Italy’s Andreas Seppi should be his opponent. Seppi will need to edge Mackenzie McDonald and Vasek Pospisil or Alex Bolt to get that far. Mannarino is my pick to reach the semis.

Matt Ebden is my dark horse pick this week. Pierre-Hugues Herbert comes off a doubles final in Paris and Gilles Muller is struggling (his round 1 and 2 opponents). Presuming he beats Muller he should defeat fellow journeyman Yuichi Sugita in the quarters. Sugita gets Nikoloz Basilashvili in round 1 (he struggles on grass), with Marius Copil or Aljaz Bedene to follow, both beatable opponents.

Tournament favorite Richard Gasquet draws Evgeny Donskoy or qualifier Franko Skugor in round 2. Gasquet should win and also defeat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarters. The Greek opens with local wild card Tallon Griekspoor, Malek Jaziri or Max Purcell will follow.

Ivo Karlovic vs. Robin Haase looks like a crucial round 1 match. I’ll back the struggling veteran Karlovic to win that and also defeat Marcos Baghdatis or Bernard Tomic to reach the quarters. Tomic has a great chance in theory, but he’s far from consistent these days. Look for Karlvoic to face Daniil Medvedev in the quarters. Medvedev is good on grass and should upset Fernando Verdasco in round 2 after defeating Yuki Bhambri in round 1. I’ll back Karlovic to reach the semis.

Mannarino beating Gasquet would be an upset but I’m not convinced Gasquet’s entirely fit and Mannarino is the type of player who badly needs points at the faster court tournaments like this.

2017 ATP Chengdu and Shenzhen Preview and Predictions

The ATP Asian swing kicks off this week with two ATP 250 level stops in China, here is your full previews with predictions.

ATP Chengdu

Dominic Thiem highlights the field in Chengdu, coming off the Laver Cup exo, Thiem should be tested by Borna Coric in round 2, and either Nikoloz Basilashvili or Viktor Troicki in the quarterfinals. Basilashvili reached the semis in Metz, and his promising form means he should push Thiem in the quarters, presuming the Austrian is fit, he should reach the semifinals.

Andrey Rublev and Metz champion Peter Gojowczyk look to be on a collision course for the quarterfinals. Rublev’s form should help him past Taiwan’s Rendy Lu, and either Gojowczyk or Leonardo Mayer in the quarters.

Japan’s Yuichi Sugita has had a career best year, Sugita should find his way past Albert Ramos or Dusan Lajovic in the quarterfinals and has a chance to be champion this week.

Kyle Edmund and Karen Khachanov could face off in the quarters, but the in-form Jan-Lennard Struff could disrupt the apple cart. Khachanov isn’t in the best of form, Struff should beat Denis Istomin and Khachanov. Edmund will line up opposite the struggling Bernard Tomic, Jared Donaldson or  Stefanos Tsitsipas will follow. Donaldson is dangerous, but presuming Edmund is fit he should have the edge all the way into the semis.

Thiem and Edmund should be favorites to reach the final, with Thiem a likely champion in this competitive tournament.

ATP Shenzhen

The Zverev brothers lead the Shenzhen field. Alexander, the top seed, opens with Davis Cup hero Steve Darcis or wild card Ze Zhang, Damir Dzumhur, the St. Petersburg champion, will face John Millman to open, I have Millman finding form and beating Lukas Lacko or Marcel Granollers after beating Dzumhur, and then falling to Zverev in the quarters.

Mischa Zverev opens with Dudi Sela or Matthew Ebden, Alexandr Dolgopolov should overcome his countryman Sergiy Stakhovsky, (and Lloyd Harris in the first round), I have Dolgopolov beating Zverev on account of Zverev not being 100% fit.

David Goffin should get past Evgeny Donskoy or Akira Santillan, with Donald Young or newly married Jeremy Chardy up in the quarters. Unless Goffin is in poor form he should be safe to reach the semis.

Joao Sousa is a strong favorite to emerge from his section, he opens with Henri Laaksonen, Marius Copil or Malek Jaziri will follow, with Paolo Lorenzi or Rogerio Dutra Silva likely in the quarters.

Alexander Zverev and David Goffin are the co-favorites to take home the title in Shenzhen, and I give the slightest edge to Zverev by virtue of his tremendous season.

France and Belgium to Meet in 2017 Davis Cup Final

European neighbors France and Belgium will face off in the 2017 Davis Cup final, as the depth of France will contrast with the team spirit of Belgium. The French saw off an outmatched Serbian side in the semifinals 3-1. Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut combined to take the doubles rubber, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won both his singles rubbers against Laslo Djere and Dusan Lajovic, making Lajovic’s win against Lucas Pouille in the opening rubber a moot point. Belgium had a great Sunday against Australia, winning the final 2 rubbers for a 3-2 victory in the tie. David Goffin and Steve Darcis combined to defeat Nick Kyrgios and Jordan Thompson in the Sunday rubbers, dropping just one set between them. John Peers and Jordan Thompson won the doubles rubber for Australia, Kyrgios beat Darcis on Friday, and Goffin defeated Millman in the opening rubber, as Goffin was the hero of the tie.

In the World Group Playoffs, young gun Denis Shapovalov led Canada to a 3-2 win over India, Marton Fucsovics led Hungary to a 3-1 upset of Russia, Yuichi Sugita got a pair of wins to help Japan beat Brazil 3-1, Cedrik-Marcel Stebe and Jan-Lennard Struff led a depleted Germany to a 3-2 win over Portugal, veteran Marco Chiudinelli starred for Switzerland as they defeated Belarus 3-2, Marin Cilic won two singles rubbers and the doubles rubber to help Croatia defeat Colombia 4-1. Holland and Kazahkstan were the upset victors in the playoffs. The Dutch led by Robin Haase won the doubles rubber and the last two singles rubbers for a 3-2 win over the Czech Republic. Thiemo De Bakker defeated Lukas Rosol in the decisive 5th rubber. Mikhail Kukushkin was a double victor for the Kazakh’s against Argentina in a 3-2 win.

South Africa, Sweden, Barbados, and Pakistan reached Group 1 for 2018 in their respective regions.

Sock, Goffin, Berdych, Ostapenko, Radwanska Upset at @CincyTennis

It didn’t take long to get things moving on a hot and muggy day at the Western & Southern Open. Five big names went down yesterday, but the biggest stars remain in contention heading into the latter part of the tournament.

Juan Martin del Potro had the fan support and the support of 17 aces as he came back from the brink to win against 10 seed Tomas Berdych, 3-6, 7-6(1), 6-0. Speaking of aces, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was sprayed by 19 of them from Ivo Karlovic en route to the big man’s 6-4, 7-6(9) tiebreak win. Delpo plays qualifier Mitchell Krueger on Grandstand this afternoon.

Grand slam champion Jelena Ostapenko was forced to play a match on far-flung Court 8, perhaps the most obscure court of all at the tournament. While non-slam winners like Radwanska, Cibulkova, Konjuh and Goerges got show court match ups, Ostapenko got Court 8. And she got Krunic, the qualifier who upset her 6-4, 6-2. Krunic gets Suarez Navarro later today.

Aga Radwanska got a show court, but Julia Goerges was the one who put on the show in a 6-4, 6-4 routining. The German faces Canadian Francoise Abanda next.

David Goffin was no match at all for the plucky Nick Kyrgios. The Aussie breezed past 9 seed Goffin, 6-2, 6-3. Kyrgios meets Dolgopolov next.

Jack Sock was sent off early with a fine performance by Yuichi Sugita on Center Court, 7-5, 6-4. Sugita advanced to face qualifier Joao Sousa tonight.

And of course tonight is the night of Rafael Nadal, who opens his campaign against Richard Gasquet. More heat and humidity in store today, but the real sizzle is the on-court action.

Novak Djokovic emerged from the Aegon International in Eastbourne as a champion, taking the final against Gael Monfils 6-3 6-4, ensuring he won’t have lost more than one match on grass in a season since 2013, and that he has two ATP titles this year. The superstar Serbian didn’t drop a set in matches against Vasek Pospisil, Donald Young, and Daniil Medvedev in a tournament that was plagued by rain delays. Monfils reached his first final in a year by beating Cam Norrie, Bernard Tomic, and Richard Gasquet, his win over Gasquet one of the matches of the year as he recovered from a knee injury, and closed the match out in three despite serving for the match in set #2.

The Bryan Brothers won the doubles against Rohan Bopanna and Andre Sa.

ATP Antalya

Yuichi Sugita will move to a career high ranking well into the top 100, as he won his first ever ATP title, and continued a career best season. The 28 year old has won more than 30 matches at all levels and claimed the final over Adrian Mannarino 6-1 7-6. He adds the ATP trophy to a trophy case that includes three challengers this season. Sugita beat Matt Ebden, David Ferrer, Daniel Altmaier, and Marcos Baghdatis to reach the final. Mannarino reached his first final in two years with wins over Borna Coric, Mohamed Safwat, Fernando Verdasco from a set and a break down, and Andreas Seppi.

Robert Lindstedt and Aisam Ul-Haq Qureshi beat Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic in the doubles final.

Mason, OH–It wasn’t easy, but the Western & Southern Open qualifiers are finally set. The rain was punishing at times today, arriving only after grounds crews on a series of courts had put the on the finishing drying touches. And then it happened again. And again. That put even more pressure on the twelve qualifiers who played twice today to cover for yesterday’s suspended matches. The local Fox meteorologist said almost two inches of rain fell in Mason. I believe it, because my car got stuck coming into the lot this morning. Thanks to the kind parking people for spending ten minutes hard labor pushing my station wagon out of a swamp.

During the non-rain delays today, tournament officials got the matches played.

On the men’s side, the first main draw singles first round match of 2016 had Borna Cornic outlasting Benoit Paire 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. On Court 4, Yuichi Sugita made it look easy as he advanced to the main draw by taking out big Kyle Edmund, 6-4, 6-3. That was a statement compared to Saturday, where he almost tried to hand Guido Pella the victory.

In women’s qualifying, Daria Gavrilova showed she belonged in the main draw with a convincing win over Naomi Osaka where Gavrilova saved all four of Osaka’s break point chances. Later, Genie Bouchard continued to coast on Center Court for the second time in two days. Viktorija Gloubic, who Bouchard beat, 6-4, 6-2, was her latest springboard and second workmanlike performance in a row, having dispatched Carina Witthoeft yesterday, 6-4, 6-1. Congratulations to the sole American to qualify, Ali Riske. Oh, America: 1 out of the 19 in Cincy qualifiers over the weekend, but who’s counting?

David Ferrer is first on Center Court tomorrow against Julian Benneateau. Tonight’s bumped match between Jared Donaldson and Nicolas Almagro opens up Stadium 3, while tomorrow’s evening session features Ana Ivanovic, Nick Kyrgios, Christina McHale, Gilles Simon and Grigor Dimitrov.

With 38 singles matches and a 10:00 am shotgun start, the race was on to beat the weather and sort through the qualifying field yesterday. Twelve women and only seven men will move on to the main draw later today at the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio. Six first round singles matches will need to be concluded as well, bumped due to evening rain.

Brian Baker

Brian Baker was first up on Center Court and was in good form in a 6-2, 6-4 win over Diego Schwartzman in 64 minutes in some serious summer humidity.

Genie Bouchard looked like the Genie of old while dispatching Carina Witthoeft, 6-4, 6-1, in a match that felt like the main draw, mostly because hundreds of fans waited for the Canadian sensation to grant them autographs. Amazingly, Genie got to them all. Credit to WTA and security for letting her stick around on-court for about 15 minutes with three more matches to be played and storm clouds threatening. The rain did arrive later, during the Lepchecko-Vekic match and again and again.

Yuichi Sugita and Kyle Edmund won three-setters and looked impressive today. Which one will look impressive tomorrow and qualify for the main draw? They’ll meet first on Court 4 at 10:00 a.m.

Main draw play kicks off here as well today, as Kevin Anderson takes on Dolgo before Borna Coric and Benoit Paire settle it in the nightcap. Coric-Paire looks to be a very interesting match. Usually I gripe that organizers only throw you main draw scraps on qualifying finals days, but those aren’t scraps. However, as of 9:00 a.m., the skies and the daily weather forecast look like bad news. Let’s hope the qualies can conclude today.

Speaking of bad news, Petra Kvitova is out.

“I’m really disappointed to withdraw from the Western & Southern Open,” Kvitova told tournament organizers. “I always look forward to coming back to play in front of the great crowds in Cincinnati and look forward to being back there next year.”

Belinda Bencic now moves into her spot.  Elina Svitolina becomes the 17th seed and moves to the spot previously held by Bencic. A qualifier or lucky loser will then be drawn to take Svitolina’s spot opposite Christina McHale in the draw following the conclusion of qualifying play.

WASHINGTON (July 1, 2016) — The Citi Open® Tennis Tournament announces its exciting fields of players competing in the qualifying rounds for a coveted spot in the main draw. Qualifying rounds will be held July 16-17 at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center.

For a list of qualifying players, go to www.citiopentennis.com, under the Players tab. Players are subject to change due to injury or other unforeseen circumstances. Tickets start at just $10 – a deal for the whole family.

Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, who achieved a career-high ranking of No. 69 in 2015, will receive a wild card into the qualifying rounds. Another wild card confirmed for the early rounds is American Ulises Blanch. He joins other young players identified as ATP’s Next Gen in the early rounds — American Jared Donaldson and Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka. The men’s field includes seven Americans and three Japanese players, including current top seed Yuichi Sugita.

American Louisa Chirico, who reached the quarterfinals at last year’s Citi Open and the semifinals in Madrid, is the current top seed in the women’s field. Another promising American player, Samantha Crawford, will also compete as she nears the top 100 in the WTA Tour. Four Americans and three Japanese players are included in this year’s field.
