DEFENDING CHAMPION AND WORLD NO. 4 PETRA KVITOVA COMMITS TO 2015 CONNECTICUT OPEN
Two-Time Grand Slam Champion Defeats World No. 1 Serena Williams En Route To Madrid Title On Sunday; Joins Rising Star Madison Keys as Early Commit
NEW HAVEN, Conn., May 13, 2015 – Defending Champion and World No. 4 Petra Kvitova has committed to play the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies, a WTA event that is part of the Emirates Airline US Open Series to be held August 21-29, 2015 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale, it was announced today by Tournament Director Anne Worcester.
Kvitova captured her second Connecticut Open title last year in dominating fashion, bouncing each opponent in straight sets en route to victory. The Czech star has triumphed in New Haven two of the last three years, winning her first Connecticut Open crown in 2012, and also reached the final in 2013. The World No. 4 and two-time Wimbledon Champion is off to another great start in 2015. This past week she defeated World No. 1 Serena Williams in the semifinals at Madrid before capturing the title on Sunday. In addition, this year she won the title at Sydney and made the semifinal in Shenzhen, China.
“I’m so happy to be going back to the Connecticut Open this summer,” said Kvitova. “As a two-time champion in New Haven, it is a really special tournament for me. I have great memories from playing there and hope to have another good run this year. It is the perfect place for us to prepare for the US Open and also for the fans to get close to the action before the last Grand Slam of the year.”
Over the past four plus years the heavy-hitting left-hander has captured 15 titles, three Fed Cup titles with the Czech Republic while amassing a 20-2 record, reached a career-high ranking of No. 2 in the world, and earned the WTA “Player of the Year” award. She joins another big server in World No. 17, rising American star and Australian Open semifinalist Madison Keys as players already committed to the tournament.
“Welcoming back two-time and defending champion Petra Kvitova gives the Connecticut Open another dynamic early commitment and two of the top 20 players in the world,” said Worcester. “Combined with rising star Madison Keys and the return of the Men’s Legends event featuring John McEnroe, Andy Roddick, James Blake and Jim Courier, the 2015 Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies promises to be another star-studded event that will be sure to entertain fans statewide.”
Fans will also get to enjoy men’s tennis once again in New Haven, as the tournament will bring together some of the game’s most well-known and talented legends for two entertaining evenings of tennis. For the second consecutive year, Fairfield native James Blake, Andy Roddick and Jim Courier will compete in the Legends Event and will be joined by John McEnroe for the 2015 edition. On Thursday, August 27, Blake will play Roddick, and on Friday, August 28, McEnroe will battle Courier. Both matches will be the second match of the evening session, following the WTA quarterfinal and semifinal match, respectively.
