HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Doubles domination clinched the 2015 USTA Tennis On Campus Fall Invitational for the University of Georgia as the Bulldogs defeated Boston College, 24-15, on Sunday under cloudy skies on the final day of play at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs went 18-3 in the three doubles sets for the difference in the match, even though they lost both the men’s and women’s singles matches by 6-3 scores. By making the final, both teams received an automatic bid into the 2016 Tennis On Campus National Championships set for April 14-16 in Cary, N.C.

Georgia opened up a commanding 12-3 lead heading into singles as the women’s doubles team of Sheridan Schuster and Stephanie Grodecki won their doubles match, 6-1, and the men’s doubles team of Brian Brandt and Graham McNerney followed that with a 6-2 win over their Eagles opponents.

It was the first time since the event’s inception in 2010 that a USTA Southern Section team took home the title as the University of Alabama won the first Fall Invitational six years ago.

Other past champions include the University of Florida (2014 and 2013), Duke (2012) and Virginia (2011).

“Our new freshman were the difference, and our doubles play,” captain McNerney said. “Every line did great. It feels amazing. It’s awesome to win the Fall Invitational for the first time.”

The Eagles took a 12-6 advantage in singles play as Alena Frye and Colin Crawford won 6-3 matches pulling Boston College within three (18-15) heading into the final match, mixed doubles. From there McNerney and Marcinkowski pounded out a 6-0 to put an exclamation point on the undefeated weekend.

“It was a tough match,” Boston College’s captain Jake Sheehan said. “Georgia is a good team. It was a really good weekend and something to be proud of. We have a lot of positives to take home and bring back to Boston. This shows that we can compete on the big stage and we look forward to the Sectionals next weekend and then to Nationals.”

Georgia players included: Brian Brandt (Atlanta), David Brown (Atlanta), Ansley Bridges (Marietta, Ga.), Stephanie Grodecki (Germantown, Md.), Cole Adler (Alpharetta, Ga.), Graham McNerney (Marietta, Ga.), Sheridan Schuster (Snellville, Ga.), Emily Shull (Peachtree City, Ga.), Annie Marcinkowski (Johns Creek, Ga.).

Boston College players included: Erica Pascocello (Haddenfield, N.J.), Alena Frye (Overland Park, Kan.), Michael Gauch (Potomac, Md.), Colin Crawford (Clarksville, Md.), Alexis Ditomassi (Longmeadow, Mass.), Jake Sheehan (Willmette, Ill.).

In the third-place match, Central Florida defeated Virginia Tech, 30-18. It was the first time Central Florida had played the event since 2012, when they also finished third.

“It was a great weekend for us,” said UCF junior captain Kleber Fukamizu. “We’ve been playing together for a couple of years now and we have really good chemistry.”

Florida, Georgia “B”, N.C. State, Auburn Advance to Semifinals Sunday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C., Oct. 11, 2014 – University of Florida knows the feeling of the thrill of victory at the USTA Tennis On Campus Fall Invitational having won the 2013 title at the fifth annual tournament currently taking place at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.

The Gators also know all too well the agony of the defeat at the TOC National Championships in April as they have been the Buffalo Bills of TOC finishing runners-up four of the past five years.

One of Florida’s top players and senior Adam Decker has been on three of those four finalists teams at Nationals. “We’re hoping for a different outcome at Nationals this year, but we have to get there first,” said Decker, who on Saturday led his team into Sunday’s semifinals with wins over William & Mary (29-16) and a close 22-20 overtime win over Georgia Tech’s “A” team.

The winner and runner-up from the Fall Invitational will qualify for an automatic bid to compete for the national title at the 2015 USTA Tennis On Campus National Championship, to be held April 9-11, 2015, in Cary, N.C.

The Gators, from the USTA Florida section, moved one step closer to that automatic bid and will face Georgia’s “B” team on Sunday in an 8 a.m. Gold Bracket semifinal. A total of seven points is all that separated all four semifinals as the University of Georgia “B” team eked out a 27-26 victory against Boston College to advance.

Georgia was down heading into the final mixed doubles match, which involved former NCAA Division II player Callie Whitlock, who this year transferred from Rollins College to Georgia. Whitlock and her partner pulled out a 6-3 win to tie the match, then won the supertiebreaker 7-2 to clinch the win.

Whitlock could be the new poster child for Tennis On Campus as she said the pressure of collegiate tennis became too much, and she wanted to return to playing tennis “just for fun.”

“Plus my dad went to Georgia and I wanted to study music business and they were voted as one of the top programs for that major,” Whitlock said. “I love this format. This is the first time I got to play the ‘redemption’ match where we were down, tied it, then won the tiebreaker. It’s so much different but I just like it. I like the mixed doubles, and how much of a team environment there is.”

Whitlock said ever since coming to Georgia she has enjoyed college. “I was a little bit burned out on tennis,” she said. “We had practice every day for two hours and morning practice three times a week. I wanted to just enjoy college a little bit more. There’s just a lot more pressure and I wanted to get back to just playing for fun. That’s what Tennis On Campus is all about.”

Georgia’s “A” team came so close to having both Bulldog teams facing each other in the semifinals, but the “A” team dropped a 20-17 decision to Auburn.

Both Georgia teams are sharing a rented house on the beach, said senior captain Marissa Pulido, who plays women’s doubles for the “A” team. “To have two teams get to the quarterfinals is incredible,” Pulido said. “It’s never been done here before so we have a new record.”

Pulido said the depth of the Georgia Tennis On Campus team speaks to how strong the Metro-Atlanta area is in tennis. Led by Pulido, the Bulldogs beat — you guessed it — Florida to win the 2013 TOC National title. “That was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences I’ve ever had on the court,” Pulido said.

Pulido said that both the “A” and “B” teams were equal and were a mix of the program’s best players. She added that the “A” team also has a former varsity player in Brian Brandt, a transfer Birmingham Southern.

The Bulldog “A” team beat Harvard, 28-20, in the Round of 16 earlier in the day. Later in a battle of Ivy League schools, Harvard downed Cornell, 25-17.

2013 National Champion Georgia To Secure Spot in Semifinals of the Gold Bracket

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C., Oct. 12, 2013 – Two North Carolina schools produced huge upsets in convincing fashion on Saturday at the fourth annual USTA Tennis On Campus Fall Invitational being played at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.

North Carolina State beat defending Fall Invite champion and ACC rival Duke 30-11 in the Round of 16 of the Gold Bracket, then downed James Madison 30-12 in the quarterfinal round to advance to Sunday’s semifinals where the Wolfpack will meet Nationals finalist Florida. Meanwhile, North Carolina-Chapel Hill took out defending National Champion Georgia 30-14 without dropping a set and winning two tiebreakers in the World Team Tennis co-ed format.

“We were there at Nationals watching them play in the final and I recognized a lot of their players when we got here,” Tar Heels senior captain Megan Huang said. “It was actually a little bit intimidating seeing them here and thinking, ‘Wow, they’re really good.’ “

North Carolina will face 2011 Fall Invitational winner and last year’s finalist Virginia in the other semifinal.

“I think we came in with a lot of fight,” said Huang, whose team made the semifinals here two years ago and placed third, but did not play this event last year. “We cheer for each other and that helps a lot, especially during the tiebreakers.”

N.C. State captain Nate Weiner credited the strong singles play of Justin Radloff as the key to the teams wins this weekend. “We’ve played Duke several times but this is our biggest margin of victory against them,” Weiner said. “They are our conference rivals, them and UNC. We go at it pretty good with those guys.”

Florida squeaked past Georgia Tech, 24-20, for a place in the semifinals.

“This is the first time we’ve played this event and it’s great,” said Gators captain Adam Decker, minutes after teaming with partner Stephanie Cruz to win the mixed doubles in a competitive tiebreaker, 6-5. It’s like the Fall Nationals. It has the same feel as the Nationals. The matches feel just as important as Nationals.”

Decker is the son of a tennis coach who has been playing since he was 9. “I stopped playing for a while in high school but when I got to college I met so many good players. I tried to walk-on to the varsity team but didn’t make it.”

Decker said he knows most of the players on the Florida Intercollegiate team. “I don’t really know what they think of Tennis On Campus,” he said. “I don’t think they think it’s this intense. They don’t think it’s as competitive as it really is.”

Tournament Director Meghan Houk said she was looking forward to the Sunday semifinal matchups. “It’s great to see three new schools get into the semis,” Houk said. “We had some unexpected results today and it keeps the event interesting. It shows that in Tennis On Campus, anything can happen and it’s not always the same teams getting to the semis.”

Bulldogs Post Convincing Wins To Advance to Gold Bracket

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C., Oct. 11, 2013 – A berth in the 2014 National Championships already secure by virtue of winning the title last spring, the Georgia Bulldogs find themselves playing for mere bragging rights this weekend at the fourth annual USTA Tennis on Campus Fall Invitational being played at the Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center.

“We know we’re in so it’s just about putting on a solid performance this weekend,” said Georgia captain Gordon Lucas. “There are a lot of good teams here. I don’t want to sound too confident but we brought our best team and hopefully we’ll win it all come Sunday.”

Thirty-two schools from eight different USTA Sections battled on Friday in pool play, which continues Saturday with the semifinals and finals taking place on Sunday. The winner and runner-up receive an automatic qualifying bid into the TOC National Championships to be played in Surprise, Ariz., next April. If Georgia makes the final on Sunday, the winner of the third and fourth-place match will get the automatic bid.

According to Lucas, Georgia didn’t bring its best players to last year’s Fall Invite and finished 17th place, winning the Silver Bracket. Four players competing this weekend were on the winning national title team, including Lucas, Jillian Estes, Marissa Pulido and Natalie Kieta.

Georgia posted wins on Friday over Wake Forest (30-3), N.C. State (27-18) and Colorado School of Mines (30-13). Also having a solid day on Friday was national champion runner-up Florida, which posted two easy wins in Pool 5 play over Furman (28-8) and Ohio State (30-17). The Gators will face Vanderbilt in the final round of pool play on Saturday at 8 a.m.

Last year’s Fall Invitational winner Duke won Pool 7 with three victories against James Madison (30-15), Georgia State (27-19) and Pennsylvania (29-16).

“This is the strongest field we’ve ever had,” said Elaine Wingfield, an on-site director at the Fall Invite who also serves as the director of competition for World Team Tennis. “We didn’t have any ‘B’ teams this year and had a waiting list of 20 schools that wanted to get in. It just shows the growth and strength of this event.”

ENJOYING THE VIEW: University of Arizona grad student and captain Taylor Allin said the TOC Fall Invite gives him and has five team members a welcome trip to the East Coast.

“Just the weather and the ocean, it’s beautiful here,” Allin said. “We don’t get to see many trees in Arizona so it’s nice to be able to get out of Arizona for a weekend. Plus we get to play on the clay. I haven’t played on clay since I was 12 years old.”

Arizona traveled the farthest of any school to play in the event, followed by the Colorado School of Mines.

Allin didn’t play Tennis On Campus as an undergrad, but is hooked now. “It’s really fun. We all get along and none of us would have seen Hilton Head Island if not for the tournament. We’ve been to Illinois and Wisconsin for matches.”

#SHORTHANDED: After Temple University unexpectedly pulled out of the event on Thursday, Wake Forest University got the call that they were one of four first alternates to get into the event if they wanted to compete. The first to email organizers back, the 30-player club team scrambled to fill a team in just a few hours, and during Fall Break.

That also meant that the four Wake Forest players – two males and two females – who ended up making the trip would have to play in every match. After being notified at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Chris Ford, Carrie Dajani, Molly Dutmers and Alex Spancake piled into a car by 6 p.m. and drove six hours to Hilton Head Island.

After a morning loss to Georgia, club co-captain vice president Chris Ford was asked if his team had a Twitter account. “I’ll only give it to you if you use #numericalunderdogs when reporting our score,” he quipped.

Season-Opening Tournament, Oct. 11 -13 in Hilton Head Island

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Oct. 1, 2013 – The United States Tennis Association has announced the 32 coed intramural and club tennis teams, representing colleges and universities throughout the country, selected to compete at the fourth annual USTA Tennis On Campus (TOC) Fall Invitational.

The Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center in Hilton Head, S.C., will host the event, taking place Oct. 11-13. The winner and runner-up from the tournament will qualify for an automatic bid to compete for the national title at the 2014 USTA Tennis On Campus National Championship in Surprise, Ariz., April 10-12, 2014.

“We’re thrilled for this year’s Fall Invitational, which serves as a national kick-off and builds excitement for the entire Tennis On Campus season,” said Glenn Arrington, National Manager, USTA Tennis On Campus. “This event continues to gain popularity each year. It’s a great opportunity for players to represent their college or university in a fun and competitive atmosphere.”

This year, 15 schools will make their debut at the 2013 TOC Fall Invitational. Duke University took home top honors at last year’s tournament, besting the University of Virginia, 26-23, in the final.

The TOC Fall Invitational is designed to give students the chance to compete against club teams from other colleges to maximize their playing experience and to provide an opportunity to claim an automatic bid into the National Championship.

During the Fall Invitational, students will not only have an opportunity to socialize with other teams but also network with representatives from both the Tennis Industry Association and the Professional Tennis Registry to learn about future career opportunities in tennis. Following the tournament, schools continue to compete around the country on a section level, within the USTA’s 17 sections.
