Yesterday was press day at the Western & Southern Open, so that meant off-court distractions to hear words from the mouths of the elite of the sport. Nadal, Thiem, Pliskova, Halep and others sat down for round table chats with the media.

The action on court saw Petra Kvitova with a comeback win over Anett Kontaveit, 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-3. The crowd gasped in the first set, with the former Wimbledon champion struggling to find her form. And she did just enough to get through to Stephens or Safarova in the next round.

Tommy Paul had just another day at the office in his Summer of Tommy tour, relegating Donald Young to yet another first round loss in Cincinnati. The 6-4, 7-6(4) win earns Paul a match against Isner tonight.

Frances Tiafoe quickly ended the dream qualifying run by Germany’s Maximilian Marterer, 6-3, 7-6(2) and was in great spirits after the match, joking with fans and giving away $39 official tournament towels. Sascha Zverev awaits in Round 2.

Kiki Bertens had no trouble as she stormed past Oceane Dodin, 6-3, 6-0 on Grandstand yesterday in a sparsely-attended match. Up next for Bertens is a match against #7 seed Jo Konta.

Evening play saw lucky loser Ramkumar Ramanthan advance over Christopher Eubanks in three sets and Madison Keys winning a Stanford final rematch over Coco Vandeweghe in three sets.

Off court, Rafael Nadal revealed he’s still a little sore from that loss against Shapovalov in Montreal and when asked what advice he’d give Dominic Thiem, he replied, “I’d better not.”

Garbine Muguruza is easily the most genuine and emotive player in the top 10 of anything. She talked about the emotions that raced through her at Wimbledon this year, as well as avoiding social media due to trolls. “The ones who love me today will hate me tomorrow,” she said, following up with “I don’t have to read this.” Later, she spoke about the close rankings race and the need to compete every week on tour. “Shit. I gotta play. I’ll be #25 if I skip one,” she said to a room full of journalists enraptured by her refreshing honesty and affability.

We’re heating up today, with Muguruza, Simona Halep, Venus Williams, Jack Sock and Dominic Thiem lined up for a long day of tennis.

From 16 seeds down to one as another day of upsets continued on the clay courts at the Volvo Car Open on Day 5.

Windy conditions again hampered play as two teenagers and two veterans emerged to make it into the semi-finals on Saturday. Eleventh seed Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, the 35-year old veteran, continues to have a resurgence in her career as she overcame local hometown favorite Shelby Rogers 6-7(7), 6-1, 6-1. Rogers grew up playing on the same courts she battled Lucic-Baroni in the quarterfinals.

Rogers played even with Lucic-Baroni as she took the first set in a tiebreak. “I thought I played really well in the first set, was super patient, kind of weathering the storm,” Rogers said. In post match press, Rogers said she pulled an abdominal muscle the night before against Naomi Osaka.

Lucic-Baroni took over in the second and third sets getting stronger as the match went on. “I really didn’t focus much on her,” Lucic-Baroni said. “I stepped it up a lot and I got really mad at myself after losing that set because I felt like I was there.”

The upset of the day happened when 19-year old Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, ranked 66 in the World, took out the highest seed left, No. 5 Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4. Ostapenko, making her first trip to Charleston had 40 winners against 26 unforced errors.

“Yeah, I was trying to no make so many unforced errors and still stay aggressive,” Ostapenko said. “That’s the way I play usually and yeah, I think I served pretty well today.”

Germany’s Laura Siegemund continued her hot streak at Charleston by taking out Latvian Anastasija Sevastova 6-2, 6-4 in difficult conditions catapulting her into the semis.

Nineteen-year old Daria Kasatkina took out the 10th seed Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania 6-4, 6-1.

Semi-final action beings on Stadium court at 1 p.m. where Kasatkina will face Siegmund followed by Lucic-Baroni and Ostapenko.

New Haven, CT, August 20, 2016–Day 2 of qualifying featured the remaining 6 seeds and extreme temperatures. In a day packed with upsets and drama, only 2 of the seeded players and 3 of the Americans (Louisa Chirico, Kayla Day, Nicole Gibbs) triumphed in their matches (Annika Beck: #2, Anastasjia Sevastova: #5).

Beck was nothing short of consistent when she arrived on court to face wild card Danielle Collins of UVA, who upset Stefanie Voegele the day before. Though the match was separated by just two breaks of serve, Beck proved to be the steadier player throughout. She won 81% of her first serve points, while Collins earned 60%. Collins’ negative display—including one particularly sarcastic remark to herself, “I’m so good at tennis after she committed an unforced error”—did not help her to combat the determined German, who took advantage of the American’s frustration to win the match in just under two hours.

Kayla Day outlasts Kirsten Flipkens: 3-6, 6-4, 6-1

Arguably one of the most exciting matches of the day, 16- year-old Day had nothing to lose when she came face-to-face with the world #60. A quick first set—in which she struggled to present a serious threat—left her more determined to match Flipkens’ pace. The players stayed on serve for the majority of the second set, until Day sought a medical timeout at 4-4. Flipkens appeared to ease off on the intensity, giving Day the opportunity she needed to string together several incredible shots and seal the set, 6-4. The following and final set was nothing short of grueling: Day fought through what appeared to be a shoulder injury—receiving visits from the medic during changeovers—while Flipkens struggled to contain her frustration over her diminished consistency. Ultimately, it was Day, the home crowd favorite, fearless and firing, that pulled off the upset, and won the match—on an ace!

Johanna Larsson scorches Varvara Lepchenko: 6-3, 7-5

A match that was controlled primarily by Larsson became increasingly more even in the second set; both players took turns emoting their exhaustion. The winner of the second set would be the player who could maintain her composure and her consistency. However, the match took a turn at 3-6, 5-5 when Lepchenko’s request to change her clothes was declined by the chair umpire. After roughly ten minutes of conversation with the supervisor, the umpire elected to give Lepchenko a code violation, a controversial call indeed, leaving Larsson and her team extremely frustrated. “She was aware of the situation. She knew what would happen if she left the court, and she still did it,” Larsson told the umpire, hopeful that the American would be defaulted from the match. The world #67 was, however, able to gather herself enough to capture the next two games, and propel herself into the next round.

Tomorrow, the final 12 women that remain will compete for the 9 available spots in the main draw.

10 Americans in main draw of 2016 Volvo Car Open

DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. – The Volvo Car Open has extended wild cards into its main draw to two young American players, Shelby Rogers and Louisa Chirico. Main draw play begins on Monday, April 4th, with qualifying rounds taking place on April 2nd and 3rd.

There are now 10 American’s playing in the main draw of the tournament including Rogers and Chirico – Venus Williams, Madison Keys, Sloane Stephens, Madison Brengle, Christina McHale, Irina Falconi, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Alison Riske are all in the field.

“Both Rogers and Chirico are two players on the rise,” said Eleanor Adams, Tournament Manager. “We typically award wild cards to young American players, and know that our fans will enjoy watching and rooting these two on.”

Rogers, a Charleston native, has played in the Charleston WTA tournament six previous times, and the 2016 Volvo Car Open will mark her fourth time in its main draw. The World No. 104 has won four ITF singles titles and two ITF doubles titles. Rogers reached the finals in Rio de Janeiro earlier this year and made the third round of the 2015 US Open.

Chirico, currently ranked World No. 124, will play her fourth tournament in Charleston, and her first in the main draw. The American has won three ITF singles titles and two ITF doubles titles. Last year, she reached the finals in Limoges, the semifinals in Nantes and the quarterfinals in Washington D.C.

In 2013, Charlottesville top seed Tim Smyczek was upset by #313 Saketh Myneni. Last year, as the #2 seed, he was stunned by Liam Broady. So it was no small matter that our good ‘Murecan’ Smyczek is moving on at the Charlottesville Challenger. He easily dispatched Great Britain’s Daniel Evans 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the second round for the first time here since 2012. He’ll meet Sekou Bangoura in the next round on Wednesday.

Stefan Kozlov looked inspired and just a little tired in a comebacker against British foe Marcus Willis 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. After the match, Kozlov explained that with the win, he’ll be playing a match tomorrow for the 9th straight day. He jokingly chastised USTA Supervisor Keith Crossland for scheduling a doubles match with Frances Tiafoe for later in the day, and Kozlov and Tiafoe lost that match in straights.

For Kozlov, he’ll face Colin Altamirano in the first round, a familiar opponent. But tomorrow’s prime-time action will feature Tiafoe, who might be set to score an upset against Malek Jaziri, the tournament’s top seed.

About the license plate above. This is the actual license plate of the actual truck next to my parked car as I write. It is a symbol of pride. My only concern is that it might be an unfortunate misspelling of Merica like a botched neck tattoo. Twitter hashtaggery for #MURECA shows that foreign citizens commonly use this version and often to make fun of American foibles and bloopers. It’s the thought that counts, and the ‘Mericans/’Muricans/’Murecans are playing very competitive tennis early this week in Charlottesville.

A 4 1/2 hour rain delay botched things up at the Connecticut Open in New Haven, but it didn’t ruin the day as most matches were played. Play went on until after 11:00 p.m. last night, but today’s forecast is sunny. By the end of the day, the tournament will be up to speed in time for Sunday’s qualifying finals and the beginning of main draw play.

Agnieszka Radwanska assisted with the draw yesterday, which was moved indoors due to the weather. There were more people in the interview room for the draw (25) than there were fans on the grounds at the time. About 100 volunteers were huddled in tents, but they were out of sight.

Tournament Director Anne Worcester explained that Alison Riske ‘gasped’ when she called her on the practice courts and told her that Riske had been awarded a main draw wild card. Well, Riske probably gasped again when she saw that she had to play four-time New Haven champion Caroline Wozniacki in the first round.

Christina McHale must win twice today to move on to tomorrow’s qualifying finals. She’ll play Margarita Gasparyan at noon and the winner will face Laura Robson around 5:00 p.m.

Rhode Island native Jared Donaldson sat above the player’s lounge on Monday playing cards and joking with his dad. Ivo Karlovic was up a set on Ilya Marchenko and it looked as though Karlovic would wrap up his match in two sets. Donaldson was quiet for a moment until it was official: Karlovic-Marchenko was going to a third set. The family chatted and went back to cards. Then, halfway through the third set, they disappeared so Donaldson could get ready to take Center Court in Newport to face Austin Krajicek.

It was in the cards for Donaldson last night.

After losing the first set tiebreak, Donaldson dominated the rest of the match. Donaldson, the 18-year-old Lincoln, RI native, won with a first serve percentage of 40% and never faced a break point. He also won more points on Krajicek’s second serve than his opponent did and closed out the match 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2 with plenty of crowd momentum.

Best thing about Donaldson is he actually sounds like he’s from Rhode Island. This is the accent Jill Craybas, another Rhode Island professional, never had. Many in tennis hail from places they haven’t seen in years. Donaldson, though he moved out West to train, will likely never lose that accent.

While Donaldson stole the show, other players advanced quietly in the first round and qualifying finals.

Alejandro Falla looked particularly strong in his match against Adrian Menendez-MacEiras in straights. And a very spirited effort by Noah Rubin fell slightly short against Japan’s Tatsuma Ito. As the opening act on Center Court, Steve Johnson put on a clinic against journeyman Michael Berrer after losing the first set tiebreak. J.P. Smith mopped the floor with Bernard Tomic 6-3, 7-5. And Ivo Karlovic took out Marchenko in three.
