SachiaVickery Wins Central Coast Pro Tennis Open

TEMPLETON, Calif. (Oct. 1, 2017) – Sachia Vickery needed just over one hour to beat fellow 22-year-old Jamie Loeb, 6-1, 6-2, and become the first-ever singles champion as the inaugural Central Coast Pro Tennis Open came to a close on Sunday.

Controlling the points and displaying precision shot-making from both the forehand and the two-handed backhand side, No. 4 seeded Vickery watched as a Loeb forehand sailed wide on the final point in the $60,000 USTA Women’s Pro Circuit event played at the Templeton Tennis Ranch. Vickery looked toward coaches Matt Evans and Chris Howard in jubilation before meeting the No. 8-seeded Loeb at the net. It was the third career USTA Pro Circuit title for Vickery and first at this level having previously won two $25,000-level events.

Both players said Saturday’s three-set semifinal wins took their toll.

“This feels really good, especially after playing such a long match yesterday,” said Vickery, whose WTA world ranking is projected to be No. 115 on Monday when the new rankings are released. “Jamie’s such a great player and we’re such good friends so it’s always tough to play a friend.”

At the end of August, Vickery beat Loeb 6-3, 6-4 in the final round of US Open qualifying in the only previous time the two have met on the pro level.

“Physically I was really feeling it yesterday and today and was just trying to shorten the points and go for my shots and not stay in games for too long,” said Vickery, who was cheered on by her host family and an estimated 250 excited tennis fans on a gorgeous sun-soaked day.

Vickery raced out to a 5-0 first-set lead before Loeb finally got on the board by holding serve for 5-1 before Vickery closed out the first set, 6-1.

Vickery will cash a check for $9,119 and also received a unique tournament logo-designed jewelry piece designed by K. Jons Diamonds and Gem in nearby Atascadero.

Loeb, coached all week by Felix Alvarado, won $4,863 and 48 WTA ranking points. Loeb was trying to capture her eighth USTA Pro Circuit title, and was 7-0 in finals matches coming into the day. “It’s been an up and down year for me,” Loeb said. “Sachia played great and I just wasn’t able to get anything going today. Congrats to her.”

Former college teammates at USC, the No. 4-seeded team of Kaitlyn Christian and Giuliana Olmos of Mexico downed the top-seeded Swiss team of Viktorija Golubic and Amra Sadikovic, 7-5, 6-3, to win the doubles title. Christian, who is the body double for Emma Stone in the new tennis movie“Battle of the Sexes”, has now won eight career USTA and ITF Pro Circuit doubles title.

Olmos has won eight Pro Circuit doubles title this year alone, including her second with Christian. “I just sat back and let K.K. do all the work,” Olmos told the crowd after the match. “It feels great to win the title here in our home state.”

Christian loved everything about her stay in the small town in northern San Luis Obispo County. “We had never heard of Templeton before this week, and we’re from Southern California,” Christian said after the match. “Our chemistry was just amazing today and I just love playing with my old college doubles partner.”

Americans Loeb and Vickery To Face Off In Final At Central Coast Pro Tennis Open

TEMPLETON, Calif. (Sept. 30, 2017) – Jamie Loeb and Taylor Townsend left the best for last on Saturday in the first semifinal of the inaugural Central Coast Pro Tennis Open as the two young Americans battled it out for a spot in the finals on a picture-perfect day at the $60,000 USTA Women’s Pro Circuit event at the Templeton Tennis Ranch.

Loeb, who was 1-1 head-to-head against Townsend in 2017 heading into the match, captured the win in dramatic fashion as the 22-year-old former NCAA singles champion from the University of North Carolina outlasted the No. 5 seeded 21-year-old Townsend in a three-hour match, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (8).

The last two tiebreak sets were all-action and left the enthusiastic Templeton tennis fans rooting for more.

“I don’t know how long that match was, but Taylor and I have played some great ones,” Loeb told the supportive crowd after the match. “She’s a great player and I knew I would have to be at my top level to beat her. It was close, but I’m so fortunate to get the win and move onto the final.”

After taking the first set, Loeb fell down 1-5 in the second before storming back only to come up short in a tight and exciting tiebreaker, 7-6 (9-7). In the deciding set, Loeb had lapses on her serve, but stuck with her game plan to finally pull out the clincher in yet another tiebreaker, 10-8.

Loeb has won seven USTA Pro Circuit singles titles and six doubles titles. Her last $60,000 level win came in Australia back in January.

Loeb’s opponent in the final will be fellow 22-year-old American Sachia Vickery, who came back to upset top-seeded Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Vickery not only came back after losing the first set, but battled back from down 1-3 in the third set to beat Golubic, who she also took out in three sets in a Quebec City event recently, again winning in three sets after dropping the first.

“Today’s tennis was Pro Circuit at its best,” said Ralph Goehring tournament director and owner of the Templeton Tennis Ranch. “We saw pure athleticism and strategy and gritty determination. This was a great day for Central Coast tennis.”

In the doubles final to follow the singles on Sunday, the Swiss team of Golubic and Amra Sadikovic will take on former USC teammates Kaitlyn Christian and Giuliana Olmos.

Qualifying concluded at the Boyd Tinsley Women’s Classic in Charlottesville yesterday, and the seeds better be scared. Qualifiers Storm Sanders, Nicole Frenkel, Vojislava Lukic and Elizaveta Ianchuk put in very strong performances that they hope will propel them beyond the first round. Frenkel is the lone American qualifier and she’ll be ready to jump into the Har-Tru Wild Card Challenge after her 6-2, 6-1 victory over Angelina Gabueva of Russia. Gabueva was a lucky loser, and she’ll get a chance to redeem herself in a match against the seemingly ever-vulnerable Michelle Larcher de Brito today.

But today is all about the Dothan Do-Over. Wild Card challenge leaders and Dothan finalists Katerina Stewart square off today. The match is the third of the day on Stadium Court and the winner may take an upper hand in the race for the reciprocal wild card to the French Open awarded by the USTA. A Chirico loss today would certainly shake things up in the standings and put the pressure on Stewart to continue to win in Charlottesville.


And there will be plenty of others on court today trying to snag wild card points. Of 11 matches today, only three won’t have an American on court. Top seed Sachia Vickery will be on Stadium Court prior to the Dothan Do-Over looking to advance past Julia Boserup. Second-seeded Grace Min will be the feature match on Court 7 against Gabriela Ce in what I call the “The Cage”. It’s the only court in Charlottesville with a tall fence in front of it, so it reminds me of going to watch a friend play at a middle-school court.

And Tornado Alicia Black against Francoise Abanda? Yes, please. They kick things off on Court 1 in just a few minutes.

I’ll live-tweet the Dothan Do-Over and then leave the tournament, relying on the live stream to keep me informed for the rest of the week. Whether it’s the Men’s Pro Challenger in the fall or this event in the spring, the Boar’s Head Resort is a must-see for tennis fans. Fans and bloggers are basically embedded in the café, which serves as a de facto player’s lounge so you get to watch them kill time between matches in real time. You can’t help but overhearing their jokes and stories and I promise you it’s more fun than watching paint dry. You also get an immediate sense of the real personalities of the assembled athletes. Danielle Lao has to be the happiest American on tour as she has had a permanent smile for three straight days. And I personally nominate Jennifer Elie as the funniest American on the tour. I even called her “American Petko” to her face. She had everyone in stitches joking about a certain college football standout who had been in trouble for stealing crab legs. With your laundry in your bag, and not sure where your next stop is going to be, laughter is a great medicine to get through the tour.

The Thrill of Vickery!

Although Sachia Vickery predicted a close match yesterday, she can’t be disappointed that she was wrong on that one. Vickery easily dispatched Victoria Duval in the final of the USTA Australian Open Wild Card Playoffs on Sunday at Lifetime Athletic in Norcross, Georgia.

In little over an hour, Vickery simply dismantled Duval, 6-2, 6-3. Duval was nursing a sore left knee throughout the weekend, but that didn’t seem to be a factor today. After Vickery came out a little nervous early in the first set, she adjusted well. Her aggressive play left Duval guessing, and Vickery did nothing to allow Duval back into the match. Vickery painted the lines returning Duval’s serve several times, sapping any confidence Duval had left.

After the match, Vickery admitted that the big win “hasn’t sunk in yet. It’ll probably hit me when I’m playing in Auckland next week”.

Vickery stayed loose last night, attending a local high school basketball game to see her cousin play here in Norcross, Georgia. Late last night at the hotel, I saw a huge crowd of friends and supporters show up to wish her luck. She had plenty of friends in the stands today, and seemed to have at least as many supporters as Duval, who trained at this facility in the past.

She also had her aunt and uncle here all weekend, including uncle Nicholas Morain, who is pictured below. Morain was even more ecstatic than she was after witnessing three massive wins in three days.

Like everyone else in US tennis, Vickery is headed to Auckland. She will not travel with the USTA women’s player posse. She departs tomorrow with her mother and brother and will arrive in New Zealand on Christmas day. She’s actually making her flight plans right now next to me as I type this. She leaves at 10:00 a.m.

You have got to give Atlanta an amazing amount of credit. Remember, they moved this event back a week. There’s a monsoon going on in Atlanta today and it’s three days before Christmas. And yet the crowd might have down 10-15% from previous years. There are rumors swirling that this event may go the way of the US Open and French Open Wild Card Playoffs and be spread over three challenger events in the future. That would be a low down dirty shame. Atlanta deserves this event and they prove it every year.

Vicky Duval’s left knee held up today long enough to survive top seed Shelby Rogers to advance to tomorrow’s USTA Australian Open Wild Card Playoff Final at Lifetime Athletic in Norcross, Georgia. Rogers did her best to move Duval all over the court to exploit the health advantage, but Duval’s accuracy allowed her to hold off the South Carolinian by a score of 6-4, 7-5. Rogers was out of the facility and on her way to pack for her long flight to New Zealand after a very quick shower.

#168 Duval will face Sachia Vickery in tomorrow’s final after a long and pushing match against Grace Min. It was not a pretty one to watch, as both players simply tried to wear each other down with long but unimpressive rallies. “We played and trained together so much, we really know each other’s games well”, Vickery admitted after the 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 grind.

Both finalists have reached the second round of a major before, and one will earn a direct chance to do it again. Vickery won their only pro meeting 6-0, 6-4 in Midland qualifying earlier this year.  Vickery says she would expect a closer result tomorrow. Colette Lewis and others on twitter quickly and correctly pointed out that these players are hardly strangers, with several previous encounters as juniors.

Since no one else will probably say it, I will. I think it is a testament to the growth of tennis that two African-American young women will meet for this title tomorrow. Even with the success of Sloane Stephens, Stephens and the Williams have been the exception rather than the rule in American tennis. This is a significant achievement for pro tennis and bodes well for the future interest in the women’s game in the United States.

Tomorrow’s final will begin at 1:00 p.m. I want to personally apologize for the twitter meltdown. This place is a wi-fi desert. Erik Gudris of @ATNTennis is using T-Mobile and doesn’t seem to be having the same problems the rest of us are. If you’re not following him yet, it  be a good idea. In fact, @RickRoswell has three phones here with separate carriers and couldn’t get a single one to work. This is what twitter was like in 1995, if twitter had been around in 1995.

Close Matches Rule the Day at USTA Australian Open Women’s Wild Card Playoffs

Despite the rankings, the matches are remarkably competitive in Norcross, Georgia. And close women’s matches were the rule today at the USTA Australian Open Wild Card Playoffs at Lifetime Athletic.

Court 7, which functions as Center Court, saw the first action and a topsy-turvy two set win for Victoria Duval over Maria Sanchez. Duval was able to finish off the match after some aggravation to her left knee. She got huge crowd support, having trained at the facility in the past.

On Court 5, Atlantan Grace Min continued to make the home crowd cheer with an extended 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Nicole Gibbs. Gibbs was argumentative and testy near the end of the match, declining to shake hands with the chair umpire and continuing to argue as she packed her bag and left the court. In an attempt to evade the throng of spectators on her way off court, she slipped through the back curtain, finding herself alongside the food concession employees and the cash register area, to the bemusement of the beer guy.

The most interesting women’s match was likely the Madison Brengle/Sachia Vickery contest. Brengle snatched defeat from the jaws of victory on several occasions, and the poise and point construction by Vickery in the third set booked her a place in tomorrow’s semis.

Top-seeded Shelby Rogers eased past Sanaz Marand 6-4, 6-2. Marand was a last-minute replacement for Julia Cohen. On the dubious honor of being the top seed, Rogers said “We’re all so close in rankings anyway, we all know each other’s games. That’s why you play the matches”.

Rogers, like most others here, are headed Down Under win or lose. Like last year, she’ll travel with a huge contingent of Americans and will land in New Zealand on Christmas morning, 24 hours before Christmas day in the U.S. “An Early Christmas is always a good thing”, Rogers replied. “When we fly, I get the window seat so I can lean on the window and get some sleep.”

FLUSHING, N.Y., August 14, 2013 – The USTA announced today that two-time NCAA singles champion Nicole Gibbs, U.S. Fed Cup team member Vania King, rising young Americans Alison Riske, Shelby Rogers and Maria Sanchez and USTA Girls’ 18s national champion Sachia Vickery are among those receiving wild-card entries into the 2013 US Open. Australia’s Ashleigh Barty and France’s Pauline Parmentier also will receive US Open main draw wild cards.

The 2013 US Open will be played August 26-September 9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Both the men’s and women’s singles champions this year will earn $2.6 million, the largest payout in tennis history, with the ability to earn an additional $1 million in bonus prize money – for a total $3.6 million potential payout – based on their performances in the Emirates Airline US Open Series.

Gibbs, 20, of Santa Monica, Calif., won her second consecutive NCAA singles title this year as a junior at Stanford. Gibbs turned pro this summer and won the singles title at the USTA Pro Circuit $50,000 event in Yakima, Wash., ascending to a career-high rank of No. 166. She is now ranked No. 172.

King, 24, of Boynton Beach, Fla., has finished in the Top 100 each of the past four years. Once ranked No. 50 in the world, King won her first WTA singles titles as a teenager in Bangkok in 2006 and has represented the U.S. in Fed Cup eight times from 2006 to 2011. This year, she qualified for both the French Open and Wimbledon, reaching the second round at Roland Garros.

Riske, 23, of Pittsburgh, reached the semifinals of the WTA event in Birmingham, England, this summer, where all of her WTA main draw wins had come to that point. Then, after receiving a wild card into the Wimbledon main draw, she reached the third round there and broke into the Top 100 for the first time shortly thereafter. She is now ranked No. 98.

Sanchez, 23, of Modesto, Calif., once was the No. 1-ranked college singles player at the University of Southern California and has been hovering around the Top 100 much of this year. Now ranked No. 113, Sanchez won singles titles at both $75,000 and $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit events in 2012.

Rogers, 20, of Charleston, S.C., earned her US Open wild card as the top American points earner at select USTA Pro Circuit hard-court events this summer. Rogers, who earned a USTA wild card into the 2013 French Open the same way and reached the second round at Roland Garros, has won two USTA Pro Circuit $50,000 titles in 2013. She is ranked No. 132.

Vickery, 18, of Hollywood, Fla., received a US Open wild card after winning the USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships singles title. Formerly the No. 6-ranked junior in the world, Vickery is now at a career-high pro ranking of No. 229. She trains at the USTA Player Development Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla.

Barty, 17, of Ipswich, Australia, received a wild card through a reciprocal agreement with Tennis Australia, which will grant an American a wild card into the 2014 Australian Open, to be determined by a USTA playoff. (Madison Keys was the 2013 winner.) The 2011 Wimbledon girls’ singles champion, Barty was a women’s doubles finalist at both Wimbledon and the Australian Open this year.

Parmentier, 27, of Paris, France, received her wild card through a reciprocal agreement with the French Tennis Federation, which awarded a wild card into the 2013 French Open to an American player designated by the USTA. (Shelby Rogers won the USTA Pro Circuit event-based system this year.) A former Top 40 player, Parmentier reached the third round of the 2012 US Open and has been in the Top 100 for most of 2013.

In addition to the eight US Open women’s singles main draw wild cards, the USTA also announced eight women who have been awarded wild card entries into the US Open Qualifying Tournament, which will be held August 20-23 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. One additional US Open qualifying wild card will be awarded to the winner of the 2013 US Open National Playoffs – Women’s Championship, taking place August 16-19 in New Haven, Conn.

Players receiving 2013 US Open qualifying wild cards are: Jan Abaza (18, Deerfield Beach, Fla.), who has won two pro doubles titles in 2013; Brooke Austin (17, Indianapolis, Ind.), a USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships semifinalist; local teenager Louisa Chirico (17, Harrison, N.Y.), who reached the girls’ singles semifinals at both the French Open and Wimbledon this year; Victoria Duval (18, Delray Beach, Fla.), the 2012 USTA Girls’ 18s national champion; Allie Kiick (18, Plantation, Fla.), this USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships singles runner-up and doubles champion each of the last two years; local teenager Jamie Loeb (18, Ossining, N.Y.), a 2013 Wimbledon junior singles quarterfinalist; Brianna Morgan (19, Beverly Hills, Calif.), a freshman at Florida this year who won her first pro singles title in June; and Taylor Townsend (17, Chicago), who made history in 2012 as the first American girl in 30 years to hold the year-end No. 1 world junior ranking.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., August 12, 2013 – Unseeded Collin Altamirano (17, Yuba City, Calif.) and top-seeded Sachia Vickery (18, Hollywood, Fla.) captured the USTA Boys’ and Girls’ 18s National Championships single titles Sunday, each earning wild cards into the main draw of the US Open and headlining the annual USTA National Championships that took place last week.

The nation’s top junior tennis players competed in eight USTA National Championships across America. In addition to the US Open main draw wild cards awarded to the 18s singles and doubles champions, the singles runners-up in the Boys’ and Girls’ 18s divisions are traditionally offered wild card entries into the US Open Qualifying Tournament, while the Boys’ and Girls’ 16s champions earn wild card entries in to the US Open Junior Championships.

Vickery, the Girls’ 18s No. 1 seed, beat No. 2 seed Allie Kiick (18, Plantation, Fla.), 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, to win the Girls’ singles title in San Diego, Calif. Vickery and Kiick, the No. 2 doubles pair, teamed up to beat top-seeded Taylor Townsend (17, Chicago) and Gabby Andrews (16, Pomona, Calif.), 6-3, 6-4, for the Girls’ 18s doubles title and will now play together in the US Open doubles main draw.

Vickery, No. 229 in the latest WTA rankings, has been as high as No. 6 in the ITF World Junior Rankings and trains at the USTA Training Center – Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla. Kiick, the daughter of former Miami Dolphins running back Jim Kiick, won her second straight Girls’ 18s doubles title and also was appearing in the Girls’ 18s singles final for the second year in a row.

Altamirano, currently No. 50 in the USTA Boys’ 18s National Standings, became the first unseeded player to win the USTA Boys’ 18s singles title in the tournament’s 71 years in Kalamazoo, Mich., defeating No. 14 seed Jared Donaldson (16, Cumberland, R.I.), 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. In the doubles final, No. 3 Ronnie Schneider (18, Bloomington, Ind.) and Paul Oosterbaan (17, Kalamazoo, Mich.) beat No. 4 Henry Craig (18, Murrieta, Calif.) and George Goldhoff (18, Irvine, Calif.), 7-6(4), 7-6(4), to claim the US Open doubles main draw wild card.

In the Boys’ and Girls’ 16s singles finals, respectively, Tommy Paul (16, Coconut Creek, Fla.) and Katerina Stewart (16, Miami) each earned wild cards into the US Open Junior Championships with their singles victories. Paul, seeded third, beat No. 4 Jake DeVine (16, Boca Raton, Fla.), 6-3, 6-1, and Stewart, seeded second, beat No. 1 Ena Shibahara (15, Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), 6-4, 6-1.
