Tournament Restores Full Prize Money to Players to Increase Purse by $750,000 


Washington (July 15)—DC sports fans and the world’s top tennis players got some exciting news today. This morning, MDE Sports announced that the 2021 Citi Open will be held at full, 100% fan capacity this summer at Washington DC’s Rock Creek Park Tennis Center from July 31 – August 8. The announcement comes after the National Park Service (NPS), which manages Rock Creek Park, issued updated guidelines to enable full capacity for Citi Open Fans and is further evidence that Washington, D.C. is back.

“We are thrilled to be able to invite fans back to Rock Creek Park at full capacity,” said Mark Ein, Citi Open chairman and CEO of MDE Tennis. “This is an exciting development, not just for tennis fans, but the whole DC community.  We are grateful to the National Park Service for their long partnership with the event and enabling full capacity for the 2021 Citi Open.” 

The development has also enabled organizers to restore full tournament prize money. In order to hold the event at the initial 50 percent fan capacity limit, players agreed to a 40 percent pay reduction. With all fan restrictions lifted and before any additional tickets are sold, MDE Sports proactively increased the total 2021 Citi Open prize money by $750,000, returning the tournament purse to pre-pandemic levels.

“We are especially pleased to be able to pay the players full prize money after a difficult period of time for many on tour,” added Ein. “It is all something we never thought possible just a few months ago. To do this and welcome back fans without any restrictions is a testament to the resilience of this city and our community. We can’t wait to see the faces and hear the roar of full crowds once again. It will be a very special moment in the history of this great tournament.”

“To see this event bounce back from challenges of the last year and announce full prize money for 2021 is fantastic news,” said ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi. “It sends a positive message of recovery for our entire sport. We would like to recognize Mark Ein and the Citi Open team for the hard work and ambition that made this possible.”

The news follows the recent announcement that all-time great Rafael Nadal will begin his bid to win a record-setting 21st Grand Slam at the 2021 Citi open in his Washington debut. With fan attendance originally restricted to 50 percent capacity, tickets were already substantially sold out before the announcement of Nadal went viral. The news topped 1.2 billion media impressions worldwide and has led to overwhelming demand for tickets to see the Spaniard win his 89th ATP title at the historic US Open Series event in DC’s Rock Creek Park. 
The tournament’s waitlist for tickets exceeded 6,800 names before fan restrictions were lifted Thursday morning. The revised capacity guidelines have allowed tournament officials to release approximately 3,000 additional daily seats to meet the unprecedented demand at the box office for the event. These tickets will be made available first to fans currently on, or who join, the waitlist on a full tournament basis. To provide greater accessibility, the tournament has reserved a small number of individual session tickets that will be available for sale next week. 

In addition to Nadal, the 2021 Citi Open will also feature a star-studded player field comprised of two Top-10, six Top-20, and eleven Top-30 players, including recent Wimbledon semifinalists Hubert Hurkacz and new world No. 10 Denis Shapovalov, quarterfinalists Felix Auger-Aliassime and Karen Khachanov, and defending 2019 Citi Open champion Nick Kyrgios, as well as US Olympic team stars Coco Gauff, Jennifer Brady, and Jessica Pegula, who will headline the inaugural Citi Open Women’s Invitational.

Another Case of the Mondays for @Simona_Halep as @KanepiKaia Sends World #1 Home Early From @USOpen

I hate Mondays. But not as much as Simona Halep hates Mondays in New York. On Monday, August 28, 2017 she was sent packing from the US Open after an opening-round loss to Maria Sharapova. Today, on Monday, August 27, 2018, the now-World #1 got an even bigger shocker, being dominated by world #44 Kaia Kanepi, a player who had to qualify for this main draw just a year ago. Halep became infamous today as the first top female player in the world to lose a first round match at the US Open.

The Estonian came out early and dominated Halep in every statistic, breaking the favorite five times en route to the victory. After she was down two breaks and a set, it was clear that Simona was trying to surge, but Kanepi kept playing aggressively and pusing Halep behind the baseline. The crowd was in Halep’s favor all the way down to 4-4 all in the second set, but when Kanepi broke her to set up the final game of the match, she got a standing ovation from the crowd. Kanepi becomes the first player, man or woman, to win a match on the newly-constructed Louis Armstrong Stadium.

“I love playing here in New York,” she said after the match.  “I have always loved it. So maybe the court also suits my game.” She wasn’t thrilled about the fact that the fans seemed to be cheering for Halep until the end  ” Yeah, I was thinking about that, why they cheer for the underdog. Now they cheer for her. It was a bit annoying for some time, but I got over it.”

Kanepi can advance to the third round on Wednesday when she faces qualifier Jil Teichmann.

WASHINGTON (June 21, 2016) — Frances Tiafoe, one of the most promising young American players and a native of Prince George’s County, Md., will receive a wild card entry into the main draw of the Citi Open® Tennis Tournament. The Nation’s Capital Tennis Tradition will be held July 16-24 at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center.

“I’m looking forward to the Citi Open this year more than any other tournament,” Tiafoe said. “I am thankful for the chance to play in front of my family and friends and will make the most of the opportunity.”

Tiafoe, 18, was the youngest player in the Top 200 of the ATP World Tour Rankings last year. In 2014, at 16 years old, Tiafoe made his ATP World Tour debut at the Citi Open with a wild card entry, in front of a cheering home crowd. In 2015, he secured his first ATP singles win at Winston-Salem, and competed in the main draws of both the French Open and U.S. Open. This year, he was named as one of 14 ATP “Next Generation” — young players who are rising to prominence in the sport.

“We’re excited to offer Frances home-court advantage in this year’s tournament,” said Jeff Newman, tournament director. “Washington fans have a chance to come out and support our homegrown talent — I know we can expect great things from him in the coming years.”

Tiafoe joins an exciting field of players at the tournament, which includes current top seed World No. 9 Tomas Berdych; three-time tournament champion and former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro; 2015 tournament finalist John Isner; dynamic players Gael Monfils and Nick Kyrgios; Americans Jack Sock, Sam Querrey, Denis Kudla, Steve Johnson, and Taylor Fritz; and top international stars Grigor Dimitrov, Kevin Anderson, Marcos Baghdatis, and Borna Coric.

In the exciting women’s field, the tournament boasts former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki; defending champion Sloane Stephens; former U.S. Open champion and current No. 1 seed Samantha Stosur; Grand Slam finalists Eugenie Bouchard and Sabine Lisicki; and American Shelby Rogers, who had an incredible run to this year’s French Open quarterfinals.

The full doubles field is expected about two weeks before the tournament, headlined by the world’s most successful doubles team of all time, Bob and Mike Bryan. Players are subject to change due to injury or other unforeseen circumstances.

16 players battled against each other for four spots into the main draw of the 42nd Japan Open. This year’s main draw is headlined by French Open champion Stan Wawrinka and defending champion Kei Nishikori.

Top seed Donald Young continued his recent spat of impressive form by producing two straight sets wins during the qualifying competition. The world No. 50 is playing in his first tournament since the US Open where he stunned Viktor Troicki to reach the last sixteen of the tournament for the first time since 2011. In the first round, he beat Poland’s Michał Przysiężny 6-1, 7-6 (1). The Pole hasn’t played in the main draw of an ATP tournament since last year’s Japan Open. In the second round Young played Japan’s Hiroki Moriya, who knocked out 8th seed Yūichi Sugita in the first round. Young eased his way to the 6-1, 6-4, win after seventy-two minutes on the court.

In the main draw Young will play sixth seed Marin Cilic. It will be the first time that they have played each other since 2011. Their first meeting was in the quarterfinal of the 2005 Australian Open boys competition.

Young wasn’t the only American triumph during the competition. 7th seed Austin Krajicek stunned second seed Nicolas Mahut. The distant cousin of 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek breezed past wild card Shuichi Sekiguchi in the first round to set up a showdown with the Frenchman. The American was in impressive form, dropping just one point on his serve during the first set. Two breaks during the early-mid stages of both sets was enough to enable Krajicek to take the match 6-4, 6-4.

In the main draw Krajicek will play another qualifier, Matthew Ebden. Ebden’s route to the final was the most impressive performance with the Australian defeating the fourth and sixth seed. In the first round, he beat Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-6 (5), 6-0. In the final round, he had a tough test against Japan’s Go Soeda. During the match, which lasted over two hours, Ebden recovered from a 0-3 deficit in the final set to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. It is the second time that Ebden has beaten Soeda on Japanese soil. The first was at the 2013 Yokohama Challenger.

The final qualifier was former world No.8 Mikhail Youzhny. In the first round he played veteran Finnish player Jarkko Nieminen, who is retiring at the end of the season. After a close first set, the Russian took the match 7-6 (3), 6-3. In the final round, he endured another close match against US Open doubles champion Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Youzhny saved a set point in the first break before taking the tie-breaker 9-7. The second set was also on course for another tie-break until Youzhny broke Herbert’s serve for the third time of the match to win 7-6 (7), 6-4.

The reward for Youzhny’s efforts will be a first round clash with France’s Gilles Simon. Youzhny currently boasts a head-to-head lead of 8-3 against the Frenchman. Their last meeting was at the Canadian Open earlier this year where Youzhny won the match 6-1, 6-4.

A 4 1/2 hour rain delay botched things up at the Connecticut Open in New Haven, but it didn’t ruin the day as most matches were played. Play went on until after 11:00 p.m. last night, but today’s forecast is sunny. By the end of the day, the tournament will be up to speed in time for Sunday’s qualifying finals and the beginning of main draw play.

Agnieszka Radwanska assisted with the draw yesterday, which was moved indoors due to the weather. There were more people in the interview room for the draw (25) than there were fans on the grounds at the time. About 100 volunteers were huddled in tents, but they were out of sight.

Tournament Director Anne Worcester explained that Alison Riske ‘gasped’ when she called her on the practice courts and told her that Riske had been awarded a main draw wild card. Well, Riske probably gasped again when she saw that she had to play four-time New Haven champion Caroline Wozniacki in the first round.

Christina McHale must win twice today to move on to tomorrow’s qualifying finals. She’ll play Margarita Gasparyan at noon and the winner will face Laura Robson around 5:00 p.m.

I’m perched in West Hartford, Connecticut, ready to descend upon the coast for first round qualifying and the main draw ceremony at the Connecticut Open in New Haven tomorrow. For the third time in four years, I’ll provide Tennis Atlantic coverage of the tournament in the shadow of the Yale Bowl until Tuesday night before heading south for US Open qualifying.

A big day of news for this event, as world #15 Agnieszka Radwanska nabbed a wild card, and Belinda Bencic retired in Cincinnati and withdrew from New Haven. Sloane Stephens has also withdrawn. Daria Gavrilova and Tsvetana Pironkova step up as main draw replacements. Garbine Muguruza also bowed out and is replaced by Alison Riske.

In other news, Nicole Gibbs and Louisa Chirico made the cut for the qualifying draw without needing the wild cards they were granted. As a result, Alexa Grahm and Yale player Carol Finke will use those WCs to enter qualifying.

Draw ceremony is at 12:30 p.m. with late wild carder Agnieszka Radwanska as the special hostess on the marquee.

Player field features eight of the top 20 in the world; five wild cards left

DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. – The preliminary main player draw for the Family Circle Cup is officially complete for the 43rd tournament, April 4 – 12. The world-class player field forming for the Family Circle Cup on Daniel Island is headed up by eight of the top 20 players in the world. Five additional players will join the field via wild card entry, to be announced at a later date.

The Family Circle Cup’s 56-player draw is made up of 43 direct entries into the tournament, five wild cards and eight qualifiers.

“The depth in our player field is what we strive for each year,” said Eleanor Adams, Tournament Manager for the Family Circle Cup. “From top-ranked players like Ekaterina Makarova and our champion Andrea Petkovic, to the next generation of talent, we are certain the diversity of players within the field this year will bring fierce and entertaining competition on the courts.”

At the top of the Family Circle Cup player field is Ekaterina Makarova. 2015 will mark her first time playing Charleston in five years. She broke into the WTA singles top 10 for the first time in her career in January 2015, stemming from a standout 2014 season that included a singles quarterfinals appearance at Wimbledon, and her first Grand Slam singles semifinal at the US Open.

Current Family Circle Cup champion Andrea Petkvoic had a major comeback during the 2013-2014 season. After her Family Circle Cup win, Petkovic reached her first career Grand Slam semifinal at the French Open. She went on to reach the semifinals in Stanford, before taking home an additional WTA title at Bad Gadstein. Petkovic started the 2015 season with a win in Antwerp in February 2015.

Safarova will play Charleston for her fifth time in 2015. After making the finals in both singles and doubles in 2012, losing to Serena in singles before taking the doubles win, she has gone on to make the Family Circle Cup’s quarterfinals the last two years. Safarova reached an additional four quarterfinals following the 2014 Family Circle Cup, as well as the semifinals at Wimbledon and Moscow. Most recently, she won the title in Doha in February 2015.

Rounding out the top four in Charleston’s player field is Sara Errani. This year’s tournament will be her third time playing the Family Circle Cup. Stratford Academy, Macon
MACON, Georgia, (October 18, 2014) Singles qualifying begins on Sunday, October 19 at 9:30 a.m.at Stratford Academy for the 2014 Tennis Classic of Macon.

30 players will compete for four qualifying spots on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday morning.

Featured matches on Sunday include former University of Florida star, Allie Will taking on No. 5 seed, Jasmine Paolini of Italy. Not before 11;30, Mari Ozaka of Japan takes on Jacqueline Cako and not before 3:30, former world No. 7 Nicole Vaidisova takes on Macon teenager, Ariadna Riley.

Four courts will feature qualifying action on Sunday.

“It’s a great qualifying draw,” says Mercer Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach, Eric Hayes. “There are going to be some great matches and this sets us up for the rest of the week. The weather is going to be perfect and this is what we work all year for.”

This is one of the three fall events where U.S. players can earn points for the USTA’s wildcard into the first major of 2015.

Additional 2014 Tennis Classic of Macon facts:

Headlining this year’s Macon 50K field is veteran Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, who defeated Venus Williams to win the WTA event in Quebec City, last month. Americans, Madison Brengle and defending champ Anna Tatishvilli are also scheduled to return to Middle Georgia. Also in the field are three players with Georgia connections in Melanie Oudin, Irina Falconi and Grace Min.

Even Brian Earley, Director of the USTA Pro Circuit is impressed with what could be Macon’s field.

“The USTA Tennis Classic of Macon will feature one of the strongest fields on the USTA Pro Circuit, with at least four women in the top 100 players on the WTA computer. Due in equal parts to its timing (after the WTA season has concluded), geography and the fact that the Americans are playing for a possible spot in the main draw of the Australian Open, we love that the winner in Macon will have earned the title over some of the best players in the world.”

Hayes says once again the tournament will host a pro am where local tennis players can play against the pros. A “players party” will also be held this year at Twangs, a local restaurant.
