Oracle Challenger Series Brings Professional Tennis Back to New Haven 

New Haven, Conn. – June 6, 2019 – The Oracle Challenger Series announced today that the first event of the 2019-2020 Series will be held in New Haven, Conn. at the Yale Tennis Center on September 2-8, 2019 and will also feature the Oracle Champions Cup, a one-night men’s legends Invesco Series QQQ event headlined by Connecticut native James Blake.

Now in its third year, the Oracle Challenger Series aims to help up-and-coming American players secure both ranking points and prize money at home in the United States. The two American men and two American women who accumulate the most points over the course of the Series receive wild cards into their respective singles main draws at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, CA. As part of the Series’ mission to grow the sport of tennis and make professional events more accessible, each tournament is free and open to the public.

This year, the New Haven tournament will launch the 2019-2020 Series and be instrumental in determining which players make the most of the opportunity to receive wild cards into the largest ATP Tour and WTA combined two-week event in the world. Additional stops on the 2019-2020 Road to Indian Wells will be announced in the coming months.

Additionally, the Series’ inaugural 2019-2020 tournament will feature the Oracle Champions Cup, an Invesco Series QQQ event, on Saturday, September 7. The one-night tournament is part of the competitive circuit featuring legendary tennis icons and world-renowned champions, and will be headlined by Fairfield, Connecticut native and former World No. 4 Blake; 2003 U.S. Open Champion and former World No. 1 Andy Roddick; former World No. 2 Tommy Haas; and two-time Davis Cup titlist and former World No. 8 Mark Philippoussis. The event will consist of two one-set semifinals, with the winners meeting in a one-set championship match.

New Haven was always one of my favorite stops on the tour. Losing the premier level tournament was a serious blow to young athletes in New England, because if you’ve been to a women’s tournament, then you know that women players are only treated as first class athletes at these events. Even at some of the Grand Slams, many fans are plainly obvious that they’re there to mostly watch the men’s matches. The Connecticut Open pushed up against the US Open in the grand slam’s own backyard, which was the putative reason for the attendance drag. That leaves Charleston as the only east coast stop for a WTA premier. I’m pleased that Oracle stepped up to bring pro tennis back to New Haven, but the fact is it’s a mere seventy miles from Arthur Ashe Stadium and the tournament will commence and conclude during the second week of US Open main draw play. That gives me pause. But hey, all tournaments are good tournaments for the fans and perhaps some early round losers in New York will grab a wild card into New Haven.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Sept. 19, 2018) – A maiden WTA title winner in Aryna Sabalenka, four of the top 10 players in the world, a spectacular launch at Yale’s Sterling Library and a week-long festival of events and charity initiatives combined to help the 2018 Connecticut Open become the third-best attended WTA-only event in the world this year.

One of the strongest player fields in recent history, plus an Invesco Series QQQ Men’s Legends event featuring John McEnroe and won by Connecticut’s own James Blake and the return to New Haven of former World No.1 and Grand Slam champion Lindsay Davenport, added up to attendance topping 50,000 for the fourth consecutive year.

“This summer’s tournament created a buzz that we haven’t felt around the site in a number of years,” said Tournament Director Anne Worcester. “We witnessed the birth of a new star for women’s tennis in Sabalenka and we were treated to matches worthy of the latter stages of a Grand Slam right from our first round. We expanded the off-court festival experience, this year with the help of new and returning sponsors staging more fan-friendly activities such as the Avangrid Power Zone which included selfies with players, the Yale Street Fair and our inaugural Beer Fest at the Connecticut Open on finals Saturday.”

While the tournament demonstrated growth with the addition of new sponsors, most notably in Avangrid and Hearst CT Media Group, Worcester confirmed it had once again fulfilled its non-profit mission by giving back to the communities it serves. “Many of our fans, sponsors and partners share our vision and commitment to benefitting the local community,” Worcester added. “We our delighted to confirm that we set several records this year in terms of our fundraising efforts.”

Coming off a successful 2018 event, and in order to build on more than two decades of success, the tournament will spend the next few months evaluating options on how to build for the future, delivering the best value to the community, fans and sponsors, with future developments including a potential summer date change.

Aryna Sabalenka’s amazing summer reached a new pinnacle today as she won her first WTA Tour title at the Connecticut Open, beating Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-1, 6-4. In an hour and thirteen minutes, Sabalenka overwhelmed the Spaniard in the first set and generally cruised to victory.

“This week, a star has been born in New Haven,” said Connecticut Open Tournament Director.

That star, who had scored several big wins in the last three weeks, made her run to the title by beating Sam Stosur in straights, following that win up with a tight three setter against Daria Gavrilova, a routine win against Belinda Bencic and the straight set victory over Julia Goerges in the semifinals. She is now 10-2 in her last twelve matches and will officially become a top-20 player on Monday at #20.

In her second tour final, Sabalenka said she “was nervous a little bit, on the second set even more. 40-15 and serving for the match, I was too much nervous. too much things coming in my mind.”

She answered a question from ESPN2 about being a tiger and yet, not being asked about her large tiger tattoo on her left forearm. Sabalenka told The Deuce, “I feel that I am gonna fight no matter what, and this I think is like a tiger, you know?”

There’s no time for celebrating: Sabalenka plays American Danielle Collins on Tuesday in a first-round match at the US Open in New York. Talk about cool and calm. Honey Badger don’t care.

“First of all, I have to learn to play two sets if I can,” she said with a smile, “to save my energy, and now I feel pretty fine. I am ready for the US Open. I feel like I have energy for it, my mind is clear. I don’t care, actually. Last time, I was scared, like I had no energy to do what I have to do and this time I feel like I have it and I can do it.”

After yesterday’s long matches at the Connecticut Open in New Haven, things flew along at a brisker pace today. Julia Goerges became the first player to advance to the tournament’s semifinals with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kate Makarova.

Goerges will be a favorite but the five seed will have her hands full tomorrow with giant-killer Aryna Sabalenka on the other side of the net. Sabalenka, who has notched wins against Gavrilova and Sam Stosur this week, was unstoppable against lucky loser Belinda Bencic by a count of 6-3, 6-2.

The other two semifinalists will be decided in a matter of hours but I expect the field to be Georges, Garcia, Kvitova and the Giant Killer herself. Be very afraid, y’all.

Monica Puig continued her winning run in New Haven to book a quarter-final showdown with No.2 seed Caroline Garcia.

The Rio Olympic Games gold medalist defeated Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit for her fifth straight victory, having come through qualifying.

“Anett is one of my best friends on tour so it’s tough to play a friend,” Puig told press after the match. “I just tried to focus on my game and it didn’t come out exactly the way I wanted at the beginning so I’m really happy to walk away with this win.

“I had an injury in the middle of the year and had to miss a couple of weeks so that got me down quite a bit. I’m happy to have regained confidence in my game and I just feel really good right now.”

Aryna Sabalenka ended defending champion Daria Gavrilova’s seven-match Connecticut Open winning streak late early on Wednesday evening, eking out a 6-3, 6-7(6), 7-5 victory.

“Well yeah absolutely it was a crazy match for sure,” Sabalenka said. “Now I’m in a little bit of shock I finished it on my side, but well now I’m so tired and so happy in one time.

“Every point I felt it was more crazy and crazy. I was so angry on myself and I thought you have to do it, you led 4-0, it’s just one way to finish the match.”

Having stormed back from 1-5 and set point down to serve for the second set, Sabalenka looked set to finish on one of those lights-out passages of momentum.

But the dogged Aussie, with her ability to counter-punch and turn defense into offense, broke to send the set to a tie-break.

A fifth set point went begging for Gavrilova on a double fault but she leveled the clash on her sixth opportunity when Sabalenka was drawn wide on a forehand pass.

With coach Dmitry Tursunov calming his explosive charge down after she saw the second set disappear, Sabalenka again went flat out, racing to 4-0.

“I look at him and he’s calm and I start to be calm,” Sabalenka said. “But today nothing works and I was calling him for the coaching and he was just like ‘Aryna you just have to be more calm on the court’ and I was like ‘What? What are you talking about?’

“He was like ‘OK, OK, just try to focus on your game’. And then it really helped me because I thought maybe I am aggressive too much and it worked.”

Gavrilova, though, has carved out a reputation on tour for giving nothing up cheaply and capitalized on a rising error count from her opponent to peg back  level at 4-4.

Composed when it came to the crunch with the finish line in sight, Sabalenka closed out the win on a break of serve to set a quarter-final showdown with Swiss Belinda Bencic.

Earlier, Russian Ekaterina Makarova backed up her victory over No.4 seed Karolina Pliskova with a hard-fought, rain-interrupted 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova.

Makarova, coming off a doubles triumph in Cincinnati with Lucie Hradecka, will meet fifth seed Julia Goerges in her third quarter-final of 2018.

“The first set was very tough for me,” Makarova said. “She’s a tough opponent. She mixes it up so I needed to stay solid and not be in a rush, but there was too much rushing in the first set.

“Then I think this rain a little bit helped me because I calmed down and thought a little bit to understand what I have to do and then I started to enjoy the tennis again with the crowd.”

It was a light day session on tap at the Connecticut Open. Johanna Konta withdrew from the tournament and Carlo Suarez Navarro entered the round of 16.

Once the matches began, Annet Kontaveit got off to a slow start in New Haven this morning. Her opponent was replaced an hour before the match as Kiki Bertens pulled out with a ‘viral illness’-veiled injury that likely signals exhaustion on the part of the Western & Southern champion. Pauline Parmentier was lucky losered-in to face Kontaveit and the young Estonian promptly dropped the first set, 6-3. She came back from 2-2 in the second set to win four straight games for 6-2 and took that momentum into the third set for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory to become the last woman to enter the round of 16 at the Connecticut Open.  It was the fifth time this year that Kontaveit has come back from a set down to win and her reward is a match with Monica Puig in the round of 16 tomorrow.

They say everyone deserves a second chance and Belinda Bencic made the most of her opportunity to stand in as a lucky loser for Simona Halep, which conveniently came with a first round bye. In an error-filled first set by both players, it was ironic that Bencic had no trouble serving it out for 6-4. Bencic got the early break in the second set and almost never looked back. She’ll play the Wednesday winner of Sabalenka vs. Gavrilova.

NEW HAVEN, Conn., August 8, 2017 – Citi Open champion Ekaterina Makarova and runner-up Julia Goerges will headline a qualifying draw full of players recapturing their best form and talented teenagers at the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies, it was announced today by Tournament Director Anne Worcester.

Wimbledon doubles champion Makarova, who won her first singles title in more than three years after coming from behind to defeat Goerges in Washington DC, will be joined in the 48-player qualifying draw by 2017 Wimbledon semi-finalist Magdalena Rybarikova (Connecticut Open finalist in 2014) and World No.16 Anastasija Sevastova, who won her first title in seven years at this year’s Mallorca Open after retiring in 2013.

Other dangerous names include Czech Katerina Siniakova, who won her second title of the year defeating four-time Connecticut Open champion Caroline Wozniacki in the final of Bastad, and Bucharest champion Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania. On the home front, Americans Shelby Rogers, Christina McHale and Varvara Lepchenko will attempt to reach the main draw.

Nine Top 50 players, six of whom have won at least one WTA singles title this year, will compete in the top-quality qualifying competition of the WTA Premier event that begins on Friday, August 18 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. Tickets to the action on Friday and Saturday cost $7.

Also competing for a spot in the prestigious main draw are a bevy of talented teenagers, headlined by Japan’s Naomi Osaka, 19, and the Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova, 18. Vondrousova began the season ranked outside the Top 400 before winning her first WTA title in Biel/Bienne and making her Top 100 debut.
Also in the mix are former teenage phenoms Ashleigh Barty and Donna Vekic plus rising stars Natalia Vikhlyantseva of Russia, France’s Oceane Dodin, and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia.
“Our qualifying draw is full of exciting players who have proven themselves on the biggest stages in tennis and future stars who are breaking through,” said Worcester. “Rybarikova, Makarova and Sevastova are all playing some of the best tennis of their careers while Vondrousova and Osaka are the new kids on the block. The top of women’s tennis is so competitive right now and the strength in depth of our qualifying draw proves that. For $7 a ticket on Friday and Saturday, fans will be in for a real treat.”

Worcester also announced a doubles wild card for crowd favorites Sloane Stephens and Genie Bouchard (both of whom are receiving singles wild cards), who paired up to reach the final of the Citi Open last week.

For the first time in its history, the tournament guaranteed a wild card for a member of the Yale University tennis team. The lucky recipient is 18-year-old Samantha Martinelli from Denver, Colorado. Martinell’s impressive junior career included winning the 2015 U-16 Asics Easter Bowl and the 2015 U-16 National Clay Courts Singles title, as well as being ranked as high as No.2 in the United States U-16.

Martinelli will join Grand Slam legend Martina Navratilova in a mixed doubles exhibition following the 7pm night session match on Monday, August 21. For one of the two sets, Navratilova will play mixed doubles with Cameron Lickle, a former captain of the United States Naval Academy tennis team, against his business partner, seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Mats Wilander and a WTA player to be named.

The second set will be a Yale extravaganza with Navratilova appearing with and against former Yale No.1 Marc Powers (class of ’13), Martinelli (’21) and Jeff Dawson (’09), a New HYTEs board member and another former top Bulldog. Wimbledon champion continues fairytale comeback after knife attack by confirming New Haven entry

NEW HAVEN, Conn., June 6, 2017 Three-time champion Petra Kvitova will return to the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies this summer as she continues her remarkable comeback to tennis after a career-threatening injury. The two-time Wimbledon champion is officially back in action after an emotional return at Roland Garros last week and the Connecticut Open is the first tournament to secure her signature, it was announced today by Tournament Director Anne Worcester.

“I’m so excited to be heading back to the Connecticut Open this summer,” said Kvitova. “Now that I’ve been given the green light by my doctor I can finally plan my schedule so it’s great to start by confirming one of my favorite tournaments of the year. Kvitova suffered severe lacerations to her left hand after an attack by a home intruder in December 2016 and many feared that she might never pick up a racket again. But the Czech World No.16 has defied medical odds by coming back to tennis a month earlier than predicted and beat American Julia Boserup 6-3 6-2 in the first round at Roland Garros, before defeat by Bethanie Mattek-Sands in round two.

“Petra has shown immense courage and determination to get back on the court and her story has captured the hearts of the global tennis family but also those outside tennis,” added Worcester. “Everyone here at the Connecticut Open is delighted to have Petra coming back this summer and to be the first tournament in line means a great deal to us. I know our fans will be more eager than ever to see this inspirational champion in action and her addition to the field makes our celebration of 20 years of women’s tennis in New Haven even more special.”

Kvitova, who holds a 19-3 record in New Haven after lifting the trophy in 2012, 2014 and 2015, has 19 WTA titles to her name. She joins defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska and American wild card Sloane Stephens at the Premier WTA event, which will be held August 18-26 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale. This year marks a celebration of 20 years of women’s tennis in New Haven and Czech legend Martina Navratilova will take part in the opening ceremony on Monday evening (August 21) as well as a mixed doubles exhibition with fellow Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander.

In a day packed with upsets and drama, only 2 of the seeded players and 3 of the Americans (Louisa Chirico, Kayla Day, Nicole Gibbs) triumphed in their matches (Annika Beck: #2, Anastasjia Sevastova: #5).

Beck was nothing short of consistent when she arrived on court to face wild card Danielle Collins of UVA, who upset Stefanie Voegele the day before. Though the match was separated by just two breaks of serve, Beck proved to be the steadier player throughout. She won 81% of her first serve points, while Collins earned 60%. Collins’ negative display—including one particularly sarcastic remark to herself, “I’m so good at tennis after she committed an unforced error”—did not help her to combat the determined German, who took advantage of the American’s frustration to win the match in just under two hours.

Kayla Day outlasts Kirsten Flipkens: 3-6, 6-4, 6-1

Arguably one of the most exciting matches of the day, 16- year-old Day had nothing to lose when she came face-to-face with the world #60. A quick first set—in which she struggled to present a serious threat—left her more determined to match Flipkens’ pace. The players stayed on serve for the majority of the second set, until Day sought a medical timeout at 4-4. Flipkens appeared to ease off on the intensity, giving Day the opportunity she needed to string together several incredible shots and seal the set, 6-4. The following and final set was nothing short of grueling: Day fought through what appeared to be a shoulder injury—receiving visits from the medic during changeovers—while Flipkens struggled to contain her frustration over her diminished consistency. Ultimately, it was Day, the home crowd favorite, fearless and firing, that pulled off the upset, and won the match—on an ace!

Johanna Larsson scorches Varvara Lepchenko: 6-3, 7-5

A match that was controlled primarily by Larsson became increasingly more even in the second set; both players took turns emoting their exhaustion. The winner of the second set would be the player who could maintain her composure and her consistency. However, the match took a turn at 3-6, 5-5 when Lepchenko’s request to change her clothes was declined by the chair umpire. After roughly ten minutes of conversation with the supervisor, the umpire elected to give Lepchenko a code violation, a controversial call indeed, leaving Larsson and her team extremely frustrated. “She was aware of the situation. She knew what would happen if she left the court, and she still did it,” Larsson told the umpire, hopeful that the American would be defaulted from the match. The world #67 was, however, able to gather herself enough to capture the next two games, and propel herself into the next round.

Tomorrow, the final 12 women that remain will compete for the 9 available spots in the main draw.
