Petra wishes she was coming to College Park.

The CitiOpen, formerly the Mid-Atlantic Women’s Tennis Championships, is in its inaugural year. The tournament will be held at the Tennis Center at College Park from July 23-31. It was scheduled to be held at the Troy Park Tennis Center in Elkridge, Maryland but the world-class facility and stadium isn’t ready yet.  You heard me correctly. Elkridge=World-Class Tennis facility/ Tournament. In the future, expect the CitiOpen to be a true Baltmore-Washington tennis event.

Here is your player field for 2011:

Player                                                        Rank                           Country

  • Shahar Peer                            #22                              Israel

  • Sloane Stephens                 #131                             USA
  • 7 spots remaining-4 qualifiers-3 Wild Cards

19 of these players are in the top 100. Shahar Peer is Israel’s premiere athlete regardless of gender. The 2011 campaign has been disappointing for Peer, but as the tournament’s likely top seed, there are great expectations for her at College Park.

Future US superstars in the field include Varvara Lepchenko, Irina Falconi and wild card entry Sloane Stephens. The tweet below from Anastasia Rodinova indicates that her sister, the Washington Kastles Arina Rodionova, will also play in the tournament.

@arodionova Anastasia Rodionova
Not this year but my sister @arinarodionova will play RT @TennisThisWeek @arodionova Will you be playing at #CitiOpen starting on 25th?

Tip of the pen to @TennisthisWeek!

We believe Arina Rodionova will be granted a wild card, leaving 2 wild cards. Venus Williams should play this in this tourament, but that will be a post for another day.

At this point, Tennis Maryland believes several players have a serious chance at winning CitiOpen

They are Peer, Chakvetadze, Dokic, Hercog and long shots Razzano and Oudin.

Do not underestimate the serious momentum that winning the CitiOpen could provide to a player headed into Toronto, Cincinnati, New Haven and ultimately the US Open.
