Bethesda’s Skylar Morton, who we hope to interview this week, is inarguably Maryland’s greatest tennis hope. She enters UCLA in the fall under the tutelage of Stella Sampras. But summer isn’t over just yet.
Skylar Morton trains here at College Park. This is not just her home town. This is her home court. So what’s a girl got to do to make the main draw?
A lot. First, she’ll have to get by the #8 seed, Agassi Las Vegas prodigy Asia Muhammed and her diamond-studded racquet.
Then, she would be forced to beat a Pennsylvanian: either Alexandra Mueller (who looked superb in a 6-2, 6-2 drubbing over Danielle Mills today) or #1 seed Julia Cohen.
That’s a tall order for the privilege of playing a top seed in the first round main draw, with a possible match against Shahar Peer, Nadia Petrova, Bojana Jovanovski or Melinda Czink.
Can she do it? Tennis Maryland thinks yes. We watched her destroy opponents in late May at College Park on her way to winning the US Open Mid-Atlantic National Playoffs in both Women’s Singles and Mixed Doubles.
Her future is thrilling. It would be a special thrill for Maryland tennis fans to be talking about her game into late next week. Besides, who among us can honestly say that they have a group photo of themself with Will Ferrell, Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova? What other teenage female player can boast that they’ve beaten Roger Federer? These things only happen in our dreams. Look out, CitiOpen. This lady can stand the heat.
