The Battle of Bladensburg was won by British troops in 1814 just a few miles from the Tennis Center at College Park. Fittingly, the doubles team of Anne Keothavang and Heather Watson begin their Washington invasion tonight against Genie Bouchard and Misaki Doi.
With 15 matches scheduled for this evening’s CitiOpen session, there will no shortage of quality tennis tonight. This is easily the region’s finest day in terms of weather, so we’ll be surprised if anyone is still playing after midnight. Last night’s match between DuBois and Mirza lasted until 12:30 a.m. DuBois’ win in straight sets was probably a great relief to the many volunteers who had to return to the Tennis Center at 11:00 this morning.
The full schedule can be found here, but we don’t mind if you prefer that we read it to you.
At 3 p.m., the very impressive qualifier Alexandra Mueller tries to continue her run with a match against Nadia Petrova on Center Court. Olga Govortsova takes on plucky American Irina Falconi, Anne Keothavang faces Alberta Brianti, while Melinda Czink meets Madison Brengle.
If that’s enough tennis for one day in your opinion, then stop reading. We were just giving you the warm-up acts.
Following those matches, American veteran Jill Craybas has a date with Jie Zheng at Center Court, Bojana Jovanowski goes up against qualifier Petra Rampre, Ally Kudryavtseva plays South African Chanelle Scheepers, and top French Canadian prospect Genie Bouchard opens against Pittsburgh Steelers fan Alison Riske.
Prime-time action features #1 seed Shahar Peer squaring off against the streaking Ryoko Fuda, and Shuai Zhang and Jelena Dokic meeting on Court 2.
Doubles play starts today, with Sania Mirza and Yaroslava Shevedova pairing up against American wonder twins Asia Muhammed and Beatrice Capra. At the same time, the forementoned British Invasion will take place on Court 3.
The three night-caps include Tamira Paszek against Melanie Oudin, Craybas/Czink versus Brianti/Daniilidou, and Grajdek/Patterson facing Govortsova/Kudryavtseva. The Oudin/Paszek singles match promises to be highly competitive.
If that’s not enough tennis for your $20, we don’t even know what to say.
