You almost had us at New Tennis Stadium.

As Maryland tennis fans, we’re torn on our overall assessment of World Team Tennis. Let us make this clear: We’ve never been to a WTT session. We have, however, watched enough Tennis Channel to have that Hollie Hobbie TV test pattern quilt of a court burned into our retina forever.

On one hand, the events appear to be kid-friendlier, guarantee appearances by stars and former stars, and in the case of our Washington Kastles just 45 minutes down 295, they have a gorgeous new stadium on the Waterfront.

Conversely, they have a season so short that if you blink, you will ACTUALLY miss it. More importantly, we have a deep-seated suspicion that the players have too much fun in their matches. There is a reason for that.  It is because they are not trying as hard as they do in actual tournaments.

Imagine if the NFL held their pre-season 2/3 of the way into the regular season. It would be tres bizarre, non?

Our verdict is simple at Tennis Maryland: We wish the WTT well. It attracts new fans to get closer to the game and it is a good place to demo your kid at a tennis event. We will plan to bring our kid down there once a year.

As serious fans, however, we will get more enjoyment out of the point-awarding events.

We would love a counterpoint to our thoughts. A DC Tennis diva attended last night’s match at the Wharf, and we’re trying to get her to write a review. Stay tuned. Our minds are still open, we promise.
