What a day! It was billed as “Super Tuesday”. Of course, that could have just been a cute DC political reference for marketing purposes. It turns out it was pretty damned special after all. Truth in Advertising award goes out to CitiOpenTennis.com. Ten singles match results are in and the play of three young players–one Canadian and two Americans–stole the show in straight sets. Acadian Genie Bouchard easily dispatched our fave Steelers fan Alison Riske 6-3, 6-2. American Madison Brengle climbed into the top 200 by taking out Melinda Czink 7-6 (5), 7-5, and Atlanta resident Irina Falconi beat Olga Govortsova 6-3, 6-4. Other winners so far include Jill Craybas, Bojana Jovanovski, Alberta Brianti, Alla Kudryavtseva, Shuai Zhang and yes, Shahar Peer and Nadia Petrova. Only the Paszek/Oudin match is still ongoing, with Paszek taking the first set in a tiebreak.
Earlier today, we spoke to Stephanie DuBois on her win last night over Sonia Mirza. Tennis Maryland started the interview in French, then devolved into Franglais, and finally morphed into a dialect so unrecognizable that only the two of us understood what was being said. We will post that interview as soon as there is a moment of calm.
The crowds have begun to really show up. Shahar Peer and Shuai Zhang had very healthy contingents of support here.

In local news, Ellicott City’s Bea Capra and her partner, Agassi Academy’s Asia Muhammed, were defeated in their first round doubles match by Yaroslava Shvedova and Sonia Mirza 6-1, 6-2.
The British Invasion did take place today, with Redcoats Keothavang and Watson defeating Bouchard and Doi, 6-3, 3-6, and 10-8 in the
super tie-break.

Tomorrow’s Order of Play has been announced. Prominent singles matches include Genie Bouchard vs. Nadia Petrova not before 6:30 p.m. on Center Court, Irina Falconi v. Shuai Zhang, Bojana Jovanovski vs. Jill Craybas, and #1 British player Elena Baltacha vs. France’s Virginie Razzano.
