On Monday, we were there for the beginning of Christina McHale’s first round victory on the Pit. We didn’t stay long or get a chance to take any good pictures, because there was a lot going on. See, it was Day 1 and Session 1 of the US Open. There were other matches in progress, if you know what we mean.
We did get a chance to look at the crowd and talk to our nearest seatmates. This is no lie: the stands were filled with authentic Jersey women who either played at her club, knew someone who played with her or generally ran into her family at the grocery store. These were benevolent, deeply-tanned bejewelled women.
Today, we thought she had virtually no chance to beat Marion Bartoli in the second round. We are in awe, Christina. You know how they love James Blake in New York? This is way, way bigger than that. Make Maria Kirilenko think about it tonight.
