Friday the 13th came early for two top seeds yesterday, as Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic became victims of lower ranked opponents. Nishikori bowed out to former champion Rajeev Ram 7-6(6), 6-3, while Milos Raonic was literally sent packing by qualifier Benjamin Becker 3 and 3.
Speaking of Milos, he was in the car to the hotel (or airport) within ten minutes of leaving Center Court. His play was less than inspired than this week, and he knew the best thing to do was to high-tail it out of Newport.
In doubles, Scott Lipsky and Sergio Gonzalez advanced to the semifinals, as did the South African contingent of Raven Klaasen and Izak Van Der Merwe.
Today, John Isner plays another giant-slayer in Izak Van Der Merwe. Some could argue that the table has been set for Big John for a repeat championship title. I’d say be careful. Van Der Merwe has proven that he can pull an upset, and Ryan Harrison better watch his back with Benjamin Becker. It is Friday the 13th, after all, and the spirit of Jason lurks in these qualifiers.
