CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 27, 2015 – Four spots in the singles Main Draw will be up for grabs to start Tuesday’s action at the 14th Annual Boyd Tinsley Women’s Clay Court Classic, the USTA Pro Circuit event being held this week at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Qualifying picked up on Monday with six of the eight seeded players moving on to the final round for a chance to compete in the Main Draw, which begins Tuesday.
The top seed of the qualifying draw, Elizaveta Ianchuk of Ukraine, got through her first match of the event with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Eva Raszkiewicz of the United States. Also making her tournament debut after receiving a first-round bye was No. 2 seed Justyna Jegiolka of Poland, who defeated American Jessica Ho, 7-5, 6-3, on Monday.
Things didn’t turn out so well for third-seeded veteran Petra Rampre of Slovenia, who was knocked off in three sets by rising American 16-year old Nicole Frenkel, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Also bounced from the singles qualifying round was No. 8 seed Ashley Weinhold, as the Texas native fell to Russia’s Angelina Gabueva in a grueling three-set affair, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
Other winners moving on to Tuesday’s final round of qualifying were No. 4 seed Laura Pigossi of Brazil, No. 5 Vojislava Lukic of Serbia, No. 6 Storm Sanders of Australia and No. 7 American Alexandra Stevenson.
On Tuesday, Ianchuk will face Stevenson; Jegiolka takes on Sanders; Pigossi goes up against Lukic and Frenkel squares off with Gabueva. The winners of those four matches will advance into the Main Draw.
Play continues at The Boar’s Head on Tuesday morning at 10AM, with the final four qualifying matches kicking things off on four separate courts. Main Draw singles and doubles competition gets under way at the conclusion of qualifying.
Only one singles seed and one seeded doubles duo will be in action on Tuesday, as No. 7 Patricia Maria Tig of Romania takes on former Tinsley runner-up Allie Kiick. On the doubles side, No. 3 seeds Tig and Sophie Chang face Ianchuk and Irina Khromacheva in the final match on Court 1. See below for full results from Monday along with Tuesday’s complete order of play.
