WASHINGTON–Zach Svajda made it through to the second round of the main draw this week in Washington and his reward is a date with his friend and countryman, top seed Taylor Fritz. He talked about his comeback three-set win over After qualifying over the weekend, he notched a 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-5 over Australian Max Purcell on Tuesday.

“I’m pretty tired. It was a long match at three hours and twenty minutes, one of the longest matches I’ve had on tour. It was pretty warm outside and it was brutal so I’m glad I got through it”, he said after the win.

After his US Open success last year and a long 11 months since then, he’s happy to be back on American hardcourts.

“I think it definitely helps having a home crowd here. I think it’s mental overall”, he said.

On the next opponent up, he reminded us of their affiliation. “Taylor and I are good friends. We practice a ton together back home because we train together at the same place. I’m excited. I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be a good match.”

The kid seems to be in a good place mentally and physically. He gives himself a decent chance of victory.

Svajda closed the interview by reminding us that Frit “knows my game pretty well and I know his game too.”

At 20 years old and ranked at #233, he knows these opportunities don’t come around every day. He’ll take the court as the last match on Stadium court tonight.
