Fan Favorite Bouchard Withdraws @CitiOpen; Today’s OOP With 20 Qualifying Matches
WASHINGTON (July 31, 2015) — Well, Genie Bouchard has withdrawn from the Citi Open® Tennis Tournament due to injury, according to the WTA.
The press release cited an abdominal injury as the reason for her withdrawal.
“I am very disappointed to have to pull out of the Citi Open in Washington, DC,” Bouchard said. “I have been working hard to return from an abdominal injury, unfortunately I am not ready to compete. I wish everyone at DC a lot of success and hope to play there next year.”
“We know fans were looking forward to watching Genie play,” said Jeff Newman, tournament director. “We wish her well and hope she’ll return next year. The field is still stacked with former U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur, Wimbledon quarterfinalist CoCo Vandeweghe, and Sloane Stephens. It will be a great week of exciting women’s tennis.”
Although Bouchard would have probably disappointed at Citi Open like she has throughout 2015, this will now spare area fans from personally witnessing her free-fall. Citi Open crowds in Washington were lucky enough to see her here while she was under the same agency as tournament owners. Remember, Genie skipped this tournmanet and then dumped Lagardere Unlimited, the owner of CitiOpen last fall to sign with IMG. And life hasn’t been the same for her since.
