Not All Oxygen in Room Goes to Cincinnati as New Haven Ramps Up
Steve Fogleman, Tennis Atlantic
On a day where it seemed like all eyes were on Cincinnati, tennis was played in New Haven. Some of the performances were very good and some were forgettable. There were fabulous comeback performances, like little-remembered world #248 Olga Savchuk advancing to the main draw of a tour level event for the first time in two years.
Then there was Dominika Cibulkova, who played just good enough to win a three-setter against Tsvetana Pironkova to open up Stadium court. Cibulkova won only 53% of her first service points but was able to save 14 of 21 possible break chances in over three hours. Cibulkova awaits the winner of the Sara Errani/Kristina Mladenovic match.

Simona Halep
Simona Halep’s performance in Cincinnati in a finals loss to Serena Williams was not forgettable. But like any red-blooded super human being, she listened to the People Who Care And Are Paid To Care, and threw in the towel at the Littlest Big Tournament on the WTA tour. Officially, it was a left thigh injury. Unofficially, it was Dehydration and Exhaustion. But not like that. Your Lucky Loser is Lesia Tsurenko.
At first, it seemed like Cincinnati got the last laugh. You know, because Serena never comes to New Haven, but Halep’s big run to the Western & Southern Open final was the straw that broke the camel’s back for the Connecticut Open’s top seed. Still, it’s a stacked field and I’m happy to be here.
